ROME, Ga. – Sophomore Jonathan Berling (Moss, Norway) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles bracket at the ITA Cup, while he and graduate student Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) also continued on in the doubles bracket at the Rome Tennis Center on Thursday.
Berling, who qualified for the ITA Cup after winning the ITA East Regional singles crown, cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 victory against fourth-seeded Brennan Cimpeanu from Hillsdale College. He will meet Harding University's Teodor Zlatar on Friday at 10:30 a.m.
Two-time defending ITA East Regional doubles champions, Berling and Torres took down Cimpeanu and Sean Barstow, 3-6, 6-2, 10-7, and will face off with third-seeded Lucas Hammond and Marcel Hornung of the University of West Alabama in Friday's (2 p.m.) quarterfinal.
