With the match tied, 3-3, it came down to No. 2 singles and it was freshman Alina Kupfer (Munich, Germany), who came away victorious and sent the top-seeded Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team to the NE10 Championship final with a 4-3 victory over fifth-seeded Adelphi University on Friday afternoon at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Kupfer outlasted Barbie Quagliardi, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 7-5, at No. 2 singles to clinch the match. She also helped SNHU rally to clinch the doubles point, as she and grad student Verena Weindl (Munich, Germany) scored a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles against Amanda Franstedt and Katarina Liedbeck.
- Weindl gave the Penmen a 2-0 lead early on by making quick work of Caterina Federici, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles.
- After Adelphi captured three straight singles matches to pounce into the lead, junior Isabella Andrade (Cochabamba, Bolivia) came away with a massive 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-0 win at No. 5 singles against Franstedt to even the match and set up Kupfer's clinching win. Andrade also tied doubles, 1-1, by recording a 6-2 victory against Federici and Julia Kielan at No. 3 with senior Guntra Upeniece (Riga, Latvia).
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire is 11-0 for the first time in program history.
- SNHU reaches the finals of the NE10 Championship for the first time since 2012-13 and will try and secure its first title since 2011-12.
- The Penmen improve to 11-9 all-time against Adelphi and have now won four of the last five meetings. They defeated the Panthers, 6-1, back on Oct. 1 in the regular season matchup, which took place on the road.
- Kupfer is now a perfect 11-0 at No. 2 singles.
WHAT'S NEXT
- The top-seeded Penmen will play host to second-seeded Franklin Pierce University in the NE10 finals on Sunday, Oct. 23 (1 p.m.) at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts. SNHU will be looking for its fourth NE10 crown.
