Penmen Fall to Saint Anselm in Season Opener

Thurston Tallies Power-Play Goal in 5-1 Defeat

(Hooksett, N.H.)  --- Senior George Thurston (Plymouth, Mass.) tallied a power-play goal in the third period, but SNHU dropped the season opener 5-1 to Saint Anselm College on Friday night at The Ice Den.

KEY MOMENTS
  • The Hawks scored just 2:08 into the season-opening contest for both teams.  Chris Lemay took a return pass from Garrett Alberti to make it 1-0.
  • Saint Anselm opened a 4-0 lead with three goals in the second period, including a power-play goal from returning NE10 Hockey Player of the Year, Andrew Andary.
  • Thurston buried a tap from Monreal at 6:37 of the third period to cut the lead to 4-1 before the Hawks added an empty netter.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • SNHU had a 29-28 shot advantage for the contest
  • The Hawks had a 20-19 advantage on face-offs.
  • Saint Anselm went 1-for-5 on the power-play.  The Penmen were 1-for-6.
  • Graduate student Adam Mercer (Belchertown, Mass.) made 23 saves.  
NOTES
  • The contest was the first of four NE10 conference games between the rivals in 2022-23.   The teams are scheduled to meet against December 2-3 at Sullivan Arena.
  • The Hawks lead the all-time series with the Penmen 39-11-1, although SNHU entered the game having won six of eight with Saint Anselm.
  • Of the 34 goals Thurston has scored in his career with the Penmen, 22 have come on the power-play.  
WHAT'S NEXT
  • SNHU will play at Framingham State on Saturday night at 7:40 p.m.  It will be the season opener for the Rams.
  • The Penmen will return to The Ice Den for NE10 conference games with Post University on November 11-12.
