Field Hockey Drops Double-Overtime Heartbreaker

Franklin Pierce Takes Saturday NE10 Game

Score:  Franklin Pierce University 3, Southern New Hampshire 2 (2 OT)

Freshman Anne Wiersma (Velhoven, Netherlands) scored her first career goal and assisted on another, but SNHU fell in double overtime, 3-2 to Franklin Pierce University Saturday on Sodexo Field in Rindge.  

STANDOUT PERFORMERS KEY MOMENTS
  • Rebecca Phillips gave Franklin Pierce a 1-0 lead off a penalty corner five minutes in.
  • The Penmen were able to draw even at 8:10 when Wiersma intercepted a clear attempt and put her shot into the cage.
  • Franklin Pierce went back in front at 23:32 with a tip-in goal by Anna Beck, again off a penalty corner. 
  • SNHU had back-to-back penalty corner opportunities mid-way through the fourth period, but could not score. Raven goalie Addy Araneo made a save on SNHU sophomore Carley Lovejoy (Kennebunk, Maine) on the only shot of the sequence.
  • The Penmen drew even with less than four minutes to play when Ruiz Hellin (Vienna, Austria) scored on a blast off a pass from Wiersma.
  • SNHU senior Taylor Marchman (Derry, N.H.) had a pair of shot opportunities with about five minutes left in overtime, but could not get past Araneo.
  • The game-winner was scored by Franklin Pierce's Meghan Winn 5:10 into the second extra session.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • SNHU had five penalty corners and Franklin Pierce had seven.
  • Peeters was credited with two saves, and Araneo had eight for the Ravens.
NOTES
 
  • Wiersma and Ruiz Hellin each scored a first career goal.
  • The Penmen last played a double overtime contest on Sept. 16, 2019 when they opened the season with a 3-2 loss at Limestone College.
  • Seven of the nine SNHU games this season have been decided by one goal.
  • SNHU and Franklin Pierce were meeting for the second time this week.  The Ravens won a non-conference game 2-1 at SNHU on Tuesday, snapping a five-game losing streak to the Penmen.
  • The all-time series between the NE10 rivals is tied at 5-5.

  • The Penmen will return home next Saturday, October 15 at 4 p.m. against Mercy College for an NE10 contest.
