(Northborough, Mass.) – The 14
th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team belted out 27 hits including six home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Nyack College on Friday at the New England Baseball Complex. The Penmen won 20-0 in game one and 12-2 in the second game of the day.
GAME 1:
- The Penmen bats went off for 20 runs on 15 hits.
- However, not to be outdone, the SNHU pitching staff combined to toss a one-hit shutout. Angus McCloskey (Farmingdale, N.Y.) got the start and tossed six innings of one-hit ball, striking out 13 and allowing two walks. The trio of Preston Yerrington (Manchester, N.H.), Redshirt freshman Conner Wagstaff (Ellsworth, Maine) and redshirt sophomore Albert Cuello-Batista (Manchester, N.H.) combined to toss three perfect innings, while striking out 5 for 18 combined strikeouts.
- The Penmen scored unearned runs in the first and second before opening things up with a 3-run third inning. Senior Ricky Jimenez (Miami, Fla.) cracked a two-run homer during the inning.
- SNHU pushed across three more in the sixth inning behind the strength of a two-run home run by senior Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.).
- The Penmen scored a single run in the seventh before exploding for 11 runs in the home-half of the eighth inning.
- The eight inning rally featured eight hits and three Nyack errors. Freshman Frankie Sanchez (Kendall Park, N.J.) hit a three-run home run and and redshirt sophomore Ryan Baumann (Brookhaven, N.Y.) made it back-to-back with a solo shot to right center.
- Redshirt freshman Anthony Poole (So. Portland, Maine) joined the action with a three-run homer of his own to close out scoring for the Penmen.
GAME 2:
- After two and a half scoreless innings, it was once again the Penmen that opened scoring with a six-run third inning. The inning included a two-run double by Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I.) and RBI doubles by Henrie and Jimenez.
- SNHU added to their lead with two runs in the fourth including a solo home run by Idelson Taveras (Lawrence, Mass.).
- The Warriors answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.
- However, the Penmen quickly responded with three runs of their own in the home half of the sixth. Senior Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.) singled home a run, while Jimenez added to his day with a two-run double. Jimenez went 4-7 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI on the day.
- SNHU would also add an insurance run in the seventh to round out scoring.
- The Penmen had six pitches combine to allow two runs, one earned, on four hits and 19 strikeouts. Brandon White (Simsbury, Conn.) started and went four innings allowing no runs on two hits and struck out seven to improve to 2-1.
NOTES
- The 20 runs scored in game one was a season high. SNHU scored 20-plus runs on two occasions last season.
- The Penmen have scored in double figures in seven of eight wins this season.
- SNHU registered its first shutout of the season.
- The Penmen have won eight of their last nine games.
UP NEXT
- SNHU will play Assumption College on Monday, March 14 at 5 p.m. at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass.
- The Penmen Field opener is scheduled for Saturday, March 26 (12 p.m.) when it plays host to Stonehill College in a Northeast-10 doubleheader.
