(Hooksett, N.H.) --- Fourth-seeded Post University's Jake Raleigh scored the game-winning goal at 5:46 of overtime in a 3-2 win over the top-seeded Southern New Hampshire University hockey team on Tuesday night in the NE10 championship semifinals at the Ice Den Arena. Post advances to play Assumption University in the NE10 Championship title game on Saturday.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Senior Jake Cox (Columbus, Ga.) registered the first Penmen goal of the night. Cox also had five shots on goal.
- Junior George Thurston (Plymouth Mass.) scored on the power play and registered a team-high nine shots on goal.
- Senior Cole Stewart (Alpharetta, Ga.) tallied assists on both SNHU goals.
- Senior netminder Adam Mercer (Belchertown, Mass.) turned aside 39 shots including 29 shots over the second and third periods.
KEY MOMENTS
- In an even-played first period, neither team was able to break through the scoresheet. SNHU outshot 13-9 in the frame. Just two matching penalties were called in the first.
- The Eagles struck first exactly two minutes into the second as Patrick Murphy scored unassisted after SNHU lost a faceoff in their own zone and Murphy was there for a one-timer.
- The Penmen responded quickly with their first goal coming at 5:00 of the second period as Cox scored on the rebound of a Stewart shot.
- SNHU took the lead at 8:48 of the second period on a Thurston power play goal.
- Post tied the game at 4:38 of the third period with a power play goal of its own.
- While the Penmen controlled play and held an 8-2 shot advantage in overtime, it was Raleigh's goal after an Eagle rush that was the game-winner.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- SNHU outshot Post 51-38 in the game.
- The Penmen won the face-off match up at 58-41.
- Both teams were 1-2 on the power play including an overtime penalty that Post was able to kill off in the opening minutes of overtime.
