ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team, making its second all-time appearance in the NCAA Round of 16, ran into a juggernaut in 10th-ranked Wayne State University on Wednesday morning, falling, 4-0, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., to see its stellar season come to an end.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS/HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wayne State earned the doubles point by winning at No. 3 doubles, as Niklas Karcz and Ben Lakeman downed freshman Boris Stastny (Prague, Czech Republic) and senior Emmanuel Vacalares (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines), 6-1, and No. 1 doubles, with Cedric Drenth and Daniel Drey doubling up freshman Jonathan Berling (Moss, Norway) and graduate student Thomas Guy (Fulda, Germany), 6-3. Luke Laws and Dom Spicer were in front, 5-3, over senior Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) and freshman Cade Nadeau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick), at No. 2 when the point was clinched.
  • Drenth defeated Stastny, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles to put Wayne State up, 2-0.
  • Karcz was a 6-0, 6-2 winner versus Vacalares at No. 3 singles to push the Penmen to the brink.
  • The Warriors clinched the match when Laws took down Nadeau, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.
  • Spicer led Berling, 6-3, 5-3, at No. 1 singles when the match ended.
  • Guy and Lakeman were tied, 6-6, at No. 2 singles.
  • Grey had captured the first set at No. 4 singles, 6-3, while Torres held a 4-3 edge in the second set.
NOTES
  • SNHU, making its 10th NCAA Championship appearance, dips to 3-9 all-time in the NCAA postseason.
  • The Penmen are the first NE10 institution to advance to the NCAA Round of 16 since 2019 when they also made it, breaking a 17-year drought going back to then-Assumption College in 2002.
  • Wayne State, which now leads the all-time series with SNHU, 2-0, extends its winning streak to 13 matches and has won 15 of its last 16. The Warriors have not lost since March 15.
