Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader With Assumption; Claims NE10 NE Division Regular Season Crown

The teams will conclude the regular season tomorrow at Delta Dental Stadium

Rindge, N.H. – The 9th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team swept NE10 foe Assumption University in doubleheader action on Friday evening at Pappas Field. SNHU won game one 8-4 and earned 4-1 win in the night cap. With the wins, the Penmen have secured its fifth-straight NE10 Northeast Division title and the top seed in the upcoming NE10 championship. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE
  • After a scoreless first, the Greyhounds pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second.
  • SNHU responded with a three run home half of the second as John Chacho (Seymour, Conn.) ripped an RBI double. Alex Kennedy (Braintree, Mass.) tripled to plate Chacho and Idelson Taveras (Lawrence, Mass.) singled home Kennedy to make it 3-2.
  • Assumption once again took advantage of Penmen mistakes scored an additional two unearned runs in the top of the third inning to recapture a 4-3 lead.
  • The Penmen again answered offensively as Nick Schwartz (Massapequa, N.Y) crushed a two-run home run to make it 5-4 in the bottom of the third inning.
  • SNHU added insurance in the fourth inning as it scored three more times including two runs on an RBI single to right center by Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I).
  • After the third inning the Greyhounds were held scoreless by the combination of Brandon White (Simsbury, Conn.) and Griffin Gilbert (Concord, N.H.). White went seven innings allowing four unearned runs on five hits. He struck out six and issued two walks as he improves to 7-2 overall. Gilbert pitched two scoreless innings allowing just three hits and striking out four.
  • Mercedes and Schwartz each had two RBI, while Chacho, Kennedy and Taveras each had a pair of hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO
  • Danniel Rivera (New Britain, Conn.) led off the home half of the first inning with a home run to left field.
  • Assumption pushed across a run in the second inning to tie it at 1-1.
  • The game remained tied for the next until Schwartz scored in the fourth inning as he stole second base and came around to score on a two-base throwing error.
  • In the fifth inning, Anthony Poole (So. Portland, Maine) homered to left to lead off to stretch the lead to 3-1.
  • In the sixth, Cam Caraher (Plymouth, Mass.) led off the inning with a triple to right center and came around to score on a Chacho ground out.
  • Josh Roberge (Chelmsford, Mass.) pitched a complete game win. He improves to 7-3 as he allowed just one run on five hits as he allowed one walk and struck out 14 Greyhound batters.
NOTES
  • SNHU earned its fifth-straight NE10 Northeast Division regular season crown and sixth overall.
  • The game was played at Franklin Pierce due to field condition issues at both SNHU and Delta Dental Stadium.
  • With the win, the Penmen are guaranteed the top seed and a date with crosstown rival St. Anselm in the opening round of the NE10 championship on Tuesday, May 10. Details to follow.
  • The Penmen are ranked 9th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll and still sits atop the NCBWA East Region Poll as well as the NCAA East Regional Poll.
  • The Penmen improve to 43-23-2 against the Greyhounds, winning 27 of the last 32 meetings including a four straight. 
UP NEXT 
  • SNHU conclude the regular season May 7 against NE10 foe Assumption University. The teams will play doubleheaders starting at 2 p.m. The games will be played at Delta Dental Stadium, the home of the NH Fisher Cats the double A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Admission is free. Before the game the team will honor its 13-player senior class.
