Junior Katelyn Nichols (Manchester, N.H.) and freshman Nadia Alden (Edmond, Okla.) clinched the doubles point to set the tone, as the second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team claimed a spot in the NE10 Championship final with a 4-2 semifinal victory against the third-seeded University of New Haven on Friday morning at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Nichols and Alden posted a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles against Alexa Orlando and Madi Mabrito to put the Penmen up, 1-0, in the match.
  • Newly-minted NE10 Vern Cox Player of the Year, sophomore Alina Kupfer (Baldham, Germany), extended the SNHU lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Valentinna Ferrarini at No. 1 singles. She and graduate student Verena Weindl (Munich, Germany) also tacked on a 6-2 No. 1 doubles win against Ferrarini and Karim Carreras.
  • After the Chargers pulled within 2-1, Weindl downed Carreras, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 singles to make it 3-1.
  • New Haven again kept it within a point at 3-2, but freshman Nadya Lyekontseva (Kyiv, Ukraine) recorded the win at No. 4 singles to end the match, as her opponent, Alyssa Rodriguez, was forced to retire due to injury. Lyekontseva registered a 7-6 (7-2) win in the opening set and lost, 6-0, in the second, while the third frame was tied, 1-1, when Rodriguez was forced to pull out.
NOTES
  • Senior Eleonora Guglielmetti (Novara, Italy) narrowly trailed, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 3-4, against Lucia Placidi when the match ended.
  • Southern New Hampshire has now won eight straight matches.
  • SNHU, the defending NE10 Champion, punches its ticket to the NE10 finals for the sixth time, including the second straight season, and will be in search of its fifth title.
  • The Penmen improve to 15-1 all-time against New Haven and have now won five straight in the series, including a 4-3 road victory in the regular season back on Sept. 26. SNHU is now 8-1 at home against the Chargers.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will face either top-seeded Adelphi University (on the road) or fourth-seeded Assumption University (at home) in the NE10 Championship final Sunday, Oct. 22.
