Cade Nadeau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) pulled out a three-set victory at No. 4 singles, as the third-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team rallied to capture its sixth NE10 Championship title with a 4-2 victory over top-seeded Le Moyne College on Sunday afternoon at the Skytop Tennis Courts.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- With the Penmen ahead, 3-2, Nadeau came from behind for a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles against Kacper Piekarek. Nadeau also clinched the doubles point with junior Jesse Den Hartog (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), as the duo outlasted Tom Jarry and Ethan Miller, 7-5, at No. 2 doubles.
- SNHU trailed, 2-1, when sophomore Jonathan Berling (Moss, Norway) took down Manuel Righi, 6-4, 6-3, to even the match. Berling also teamed with graduate student Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) to double up Righi and Peter Hatton, 6-3, at the top flight to even doubles, 1-1.
- Freshman Phillipp Roeder (Augsburg, Germany) put the Penmen in front, 3-2, with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Alberto Diaz at No. 5 singles.
NOTES
- Grad student Aron Ouwejan (Wervershoof, The Netherlands) held a 4-6, 6-2, 6-6 (5-4) edge against Rodrigo Beires at No. 6 singles when the match was clinched.
- Southern New Hampshire, which has won nine-in-a-row, earns its sixth NE10 title (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).
- SNHU, which improves to 20-11 all-time in the NE10 Championship, was playing in its ninth NE10 title match, including second straight. The Penmen lost at Le Moyne, 4-3, in last season's championship tilt.
- Nadeau was named the NE10 Championship Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the NE10 All-Championship Team by Berling and Roeder.
- The SNHU women's tennis team also captured the NE10 title in the fall, marking just the third time in the league's history under the current format (since 1999-00) that the same institution has won the men's and women's championships in the same calendar year (Bryant University, 2008; Stonehill College, 2009).
- SNHU leads the all-time series with Le Moyne, 17-5, and has won seven of the last nine meetings. The Penmen snapped a two-match skid against the Dolphins, as well as Le Moyne's larger 21-NE10-match winning streak, with a 4-3 regular-season victory at home April 12.
