Sophomore Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.) went 3-for-6 with a pair of extra-base hits and drove in four runs, as the ninth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team opened their trip to Cary with a doubleheader sweep of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

  • Sophomore Devin Divita (New Hartford, Conn.) – 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 1 BB (game 1 win)
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • After St. Thomas Aquinas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a pair of unearned runs against redshirt-sophomore Zachary Brassill (No. Hampton, N.H), Southern New Hampshire jumped on the board in the second with an RBI single to right by junior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.).
  • SNHU grabbed the lead for good with a four-run sixth inning, keyed by an RBI double to left from Wachter. Two runs in the frame were unearned.
  • The Penmen put it away with three in the ninth on another Wachter RBI double and a two-run single from freshman Jackson Marshall (Hooksett, N.H.)
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 1
  • Colon finished 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
  • Wachter went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, two runs scored and a double.
  • Junior Jake Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
  • Leone went 1-for-3.
  • Marshall (two RBI, run, walk, steal), graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.; RBI, run, walk), Lavigne (RBI) and sophomore Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) were all 1-for-4.
  • Brassill worked the first four-and-two-thirds innings, giving up two runs – both unearned – on five hits, while striking out four and walking four.
  • Divita (1-0) tossed three-and-a-third innings of shutout relief, allowing two hits, punching out a pair and walking a batter.
  • Senior Noah Wachter (Concord, N.H.) allowed a hit and hit a batter in a scoreless ninth.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • St. Thomas Aquinas again took an early lead in the top of the first, with a two-out, two-run single making it 2-0.
  • Southern New Hampshire flipped in front with a three-run second. A two-out, RBI single to right by Colon sliced the deficit in half, with Wachter putting the Penmen on top, 3-2, two batters later with a two-run single to center.
  • The Penmen grabbed insurance in the sixth with a pair of unearned runs.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 2
  • Wachter (two RBI, two walks) and junior Steven Kienzle (Holbrook, N.Y.; run) went 1-for-2.
  • Colon (steal) and freshman Nolan Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.; run) were both 1-for-3.
  • Risedorf (RBI, walk), Valera (run, walk) and junior Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.; run) were all 0-for-2.
  • Lendrum (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits over six innings, while striking out three and not issuing a walk.
  • Graduate student Cam Varney (Manchester, N.H.) recorded his second save, as he struck out one and used nine pitches in a perfect ninth.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, ranked ninth in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II Coaches Poll, as well as 11th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25 and 13th in the D2 Baseball Top 25 Rankings, has won five of its last six games.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with St. Thomas Aquinas, 20-8. The Penmen have won 14 of the last 16 meetings, including 13 of 14 and five straight. The Penmen defeated the Spartans, 8-1, in Myrtle Beach back on Feb. 23 and are now outscoring them 21-5 this season.
  • SNHU is outscoring its opponents, 51-19, this season.
  • Wachter and Colon have now hit safely in six of eight games this season.
