Marshall Bashes Three Home Runs, but Baseball Swept by Bentley

Penmen swept at home in doubleheader for first time in nearly 12 years

Freshman Jackson Marshall (Hooksett, N.H.) launched three home runs, but the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Bentley University on Sunday at Penmen Field. Bentley pulled out an 11-10 victory in game one, before posting an 11-6 win in the second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Bentley put up two runs in the top of the first, capitalizing on a Penmen error.
  • Southern New Hampshire jumped ahead in the fourth with a three-run frame. Risedorf keyed it with a double that rolled to the wall in right-center, before Marshall blasted a two-run shot to left that tied the game. Back-to-back doubles from Pisano and junior Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) yielded another run that put the Penmen on top, 3-2.
  • The Falcons hung seven in the fifth to jump back in front, 9-3, with a two-run single from Jake Maydak and a three-run home run to center by Stan DeMartinis III doing the bulk of the damage.
  • SNHU answered with a five-spot in the six. Marshall hit another two-run homer to left to start the scoring, before RBI singles from graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.), senior Jancarlos Colon (Santa Isabel, P.R.) and Risedorf pulled the Penmen within 9-8.
  • The Penmen drew even in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to center by sophomore Evan Kaplo (Bedford, N.H.) that scored Marshall, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
  • Bentley made SNHU pay for a strike-three passed ball and an error with a two-run single to center by Tommy Bolton that put the Falcons back into the lead at 11-9 in the eighth.
  • The Penmen made it a one-run game in the bottom of the ninth when Pisano drew a leadoff walk and later scored on Kaplo's RBI single to left, but they would strand the tying run.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME ONE
  • Pisano was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored, two doubles and a walk.
  • Marshall finished 3-for-4 with four RBI, three runs scored and two home runs.
  • Wachter was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double.
  • Risedorf went 2-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a double.
  • Burgos was 1-for-4 with an RBI, run and a double.
  • DeMaro (RBI, double) and Colon (RBI) were both 1-for-5.
  • Kaplo finished 1-for-1 with a pair of RBI.
  • Junior Parker Lendrum (Exeter, N.H.) started and gave up nine runs – eight earned – on 10 hits, while striking out three and walking three, over seven innings.
  • Graduate student Cam Varney (Manchester, N.H.) was tagged with the loss, as he was charged with two runs – both unearned – in a third of an inning, striking out one. He fanned the first batter he faced, while the second reached on an error and final batter dropped down a sacrifice bunt.
  • Freshman Angel Baez (Leominster, Mass.) relinquished just one hit in two-thirds of an inning, but it allowed the pair of inherited runners to score.
  • Junior Connor Jensen (Shelton, Conn.) struck out one and hit a batter in a hitless inning of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Bentley again drew first blood, scoring on a two-out wild pitch in the third to go up, 1-0.
  • SNHU responded in the home half, as Wachter, who had a two-run home run down the left field line in the first overturned following an umpire conference, made sure to leave no doubt with a solo shot to center that tied the game.
  • Bentley broke it open with a six-run fifth, highlighted by a pair of two-run singles from Brendan Sencaj and Nick Pappas, to make it 7-1.
  • The Penmen inched closer with yet another two-run home run off the bat of Marshall in the fifth that made it 7-3.
  • A Jack Matthews RBI single in the seventh nudged the Bentley lead to 8-3.
  • A two-run home run from DeMartinis highlighted a three-run eighth that widened the Falcon advantage to 11-3.
  • A two-run single from Risedorf and an RBI knock from Wachter in the ninth would make it a five-run game, but the Penmen left a pair on to end it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME TWO
  • Wachter (two RBI, two runs, home run) and Risedorf (two RBI, double) were both 3-for-5.
  • Burgos and junior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.; run, double, walk) each went 1-for-3.
  • Pisano finished 1-for-4 with a walk.
  • Marshall was 1-for-5 with a pair of RBI, a run scored and a home run.
  • Baez (1-2) started and allowed seven runs on three hits and four walks, while striking out five, over four-and-a-third innings.
  • Jensen came on in relief again, giving up a hit and a pair of walks in two-thirds of an inning.
  • Junior Jake Lapham (Lansingburgh, N.Y.) tossed a pair of frames and was charged with a run on three hits, while punching out three and walking one.
  • Sophomore Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) relinquished three runs on four hits over an inning, while fanning a batter.
  • Freshman Garrett Hammer (Auburn, N.H.) sprinkled in a hit and two walks, as he struck out the side in the ninth.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, receiving votes in both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II Coaches Poll and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25, had won seven of its last nine. Bentley is also receiving votes in the ABCA poll.
  • SNHU loses a doubleheader at Penmen Field for the first time April 7, 2013 against Southern Connecticut State University (7-4, 12-4).
  • Bentley pulls ahead in the all-time series, 45-43, and have won three straight. The teams have split the last eight meetings, while SNHU has captured 13 of 17. The Falcons have no won four of the last five at SNHU.
  • Marshall's three home runs give him a team-best nine on the season.
  • Wachter's long ball is his sixth of the season and 15th of his career.
  • Marshall, who extends his hitting streak to seven games, leapfrogs over Colon for the team lead in batting at .360, which ranks third in the NE10.
