HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Franklin Pierce jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the second, keyed by a leadoff home run by Anthony Marcano.
  • Southern New Hampshire made it on to the board in the third on an RBI double by Risedorf.
  • SNHU pulled within 3-2 on a two-out RBI single from Fernandez.
  • After a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, a four-and-a-half-plus hour rain delay followed.
  • The Penmen tied it in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single by freshman Jackson Marshall (Hooksett, N.H.).
  • Following the rain delay, the Penmen handed the ball to sophomore Devin Divita (New Hartford, Conn.), who began the sixth with two straight strikeouts, but a single and a fielding error extended the inning. The Ravens capitalized with three straight two-out hits that plated four unearned runs and made it 7-3.
  • Another error in the eighth led to another two-out, unearned run that nudged the FPU lead to 8-3.
  • The Penmen grabbed two back in the home half on a sacrifice fly to center by Colon and a two-out RBI single from Risedorf.
  • A pair of two-out walks in the ninth brought the tying run to the plate, but a pop out ended it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Marshall (RBI, run, walk) and junior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.; walk) were both 1-for-4.
  • Junior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) finished 1-for-5.
  • Divita (6-1) was charged with four runs – all unearned – on four hits, while striking out two and not walking a batter, in two-thirds of an inning.
  • Seven of the eight Franklin Pierce runs were scored with two outs.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire had won 13 of its last 15, including six of seven.
  • SNHU would have earned a share of the NE10 Northeast Division with the win. The Penmen had won seven straight division crowns. This is the first time Franklin Pierce has captured the division since 2016. SNHU or FPU have won at least a share of the last 12 division titles.
  • The Penmen finish as the No. 3 seed and will head to second-seeded Bentley University for an NE10 Championship first round game on Tuesday (May 6) at 2 p.m. The Penmen had hosted 11 straight first round contests at Penmen Field. This is the first time SNHU will go on the road in the opening round since 2013 when the third-seeded Penmen traveled to second-seeded Bentley and suffered a 3-2 loss.
  • Southern New Hampshire still leads the all-time series with Franklin Pierce, 68-52-1, and has won 28 of the last 34 meetings with the Ravens. SNHU had won 15 of 18, including seven of eight entering the day. The Penmen had also captured 16 of 21 at home, including eight of the last 10 and four of five.
  • Colon has a hit in 39 of his 44 games this year, including 18 of his last 20 and 15 of 16.
  • Graduate students Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.), Cam Varney (Manchester, N.H.), Luca Giallongo (Mt. Shasta, Calif.), and Jake Pierre (Holbrook, N.Y.), seniors Colon and Noah Wachter (Concord, N.H.), and juniors Austin Trumpour (Jensen Beach, Fla.), Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) and Connor Jensen (Shelton, Conn.) were all honored in a ceremony prior to the game.
  • Colon, Trumpour, DeMaro, Jensen, senior Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.), and juniors Jacob Cogswell (Kingston, N.H.) and Ben Hladun (Ballston Lake, N.Y.), who all took part in SNHU's commencement earlier Saturday morning, were also recognized.
UP NEXT
  • The third-seeded Penmen take on second-seeded Bentley on Tuesday, May 6 (2 p.m.) in an NE10 Championship first round contest in Waltham. The winner advances to Championship Weekend, hosted by the highest remaining seed in the Southwest Division.
