Sophomore Sophie Bilodeau (Milford, N.H.) notched the equalizer late in the third quarter, but the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team was defeated by Bentley University, 4-2, in Thursday evening's regular-season finale at Larkin Field.
KEY MOMENTS
- Trailing 2-1 with 4:43 remaining in the third quarter, SNHU gained the equalizer when sophomore Kim Dull (Wilnis, Netherlands) sent in a high drive from the top of the circle that Bilodeau lifted her stick up to get a piece of and deflect into the cage.
- The Penmen were down, 3-2, with less than five minutes to play when they pulled sophomore Agustina Miranda Waigand (Miami, Fla.) out of the goal in favor of an extra attacker. Bentley immediately connected on a long pass and drew a penalty corner that it converted on to make it 4-2 with 4:07 to play.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire had won two straight, as it was angling for a first round home contest in the NE10 Championship, however, the loss to Bentley means the Penmen will be on the road if they do qualify.
- SNHU drops into the seventh and final postseason spot in the NE10 standings, as league games remain Friday and Saturday. The Penmen can finish anywhere from sixth to ninth. They will punch their ticket with a combination of two losses by Southern Connecticut State University, Franklin Pierce University and American International College.
- Bilodeau's goal was her fourth of the season and second in as many games.
- Senior Zoe Demers (Manchester, N.H.) put the Penmen up 1-0 just 2:41 into the match. Her team-leading eighth goal of the season gives her three in the last five contests and 24 for her career, moving her into sole possession of fifth place in the SNHU career record book. She is also now seventh with 53 points.
- Miranda Waigand made nine saves for the Penmen.
- The Falcons held a 15-7 advantage in shots, including 13-3 in shots on target.
- Bentley leads the all-time series, 11-9, as it wins for the third time in the last four meetings. SNHU pulled out a 2-1 shootout victory at Bentley back on Sept. 6. The Falcons snap a five match losing streak at SNHU, winning there for the first time since Sept. 17, 2016 (3-0).
