Ice Hockey Season Ends in Overtime at Saint Anselm

Penmen fall 5-4 in Northeast 10 first-round playoff game

Southern New Hampshire University led most of the way, but Saint Anselm College rallied late to tie the game before handing the Penmen a 5-4 overtime defeat Tuesday night in the first round of the Northeast 10 Championship at Sullivan Arena. The loss concludes the 2025-26 season for SNHU.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Saint Anselm erased a three-goal first-period deficit. Sean Connolly tied the game at 17:51 of the third period and scored the game-winning goal at 6:56 of overtime to lift the Hawks.
NOTES
  • The Penmen came out flying, scoring three times in the opening period.
  • Junior Anthony Marchant (Norwood, Mass.) opened the scoring at 2:35 of the first period, finishing a play set up by freshman Aidan Rufa (Massena, N.Y.) and freshman Zach Vickerman (Queensville, Ontario).
  • Freshman Bryan Kim (Calgary, Alberta) extended the lead on the power play at 5:36, assisted by Vickerman and Rufa.
  • Sophomore Kyle Slingerland (Stittsville, Ontario) made it 3-0 at 15:43, with assists from senior Tyler Murray (Barre, Vt.) and freshman Kenny Thurston (Plymouth, Mass.).
  • Saint Anselm responded with two power-play goals in the second period to narrow the margin.
  • Freshman Jory Veenstra (Kansas City, Mo.) restored a two-goal lead at 11:08 of the second period, assisted by junior Stone Devlin (W. Falmouth, Mass.).
  • The Hawks scored twice in the third period to even the game at 4-4 before netting the overtime winner.
  • Junior goaltender Sean Guerin (Chicago, Ill.) turned aside 39 shots in a strong postseason effort.
  • Rufa and Vickerman each recorded two assists, while four different Penmen found the back of the net.
  • SNHU finished 1-for-4 on the power play and held a 34-34 advantage in faceoffs.
  • Saint Anselm leads the all-time series, 49-14-4. This marked the first postseason meeting between the programs since SNHU's championship win at Sullivan Arena in 2019. The Hawks are now 11-2 all-time against the Penmen in Northeast 10 Championship play.
  • Saint Anselm also added two bonus Queen City Cup points with the playoff win and leads the season-long contest, 16-9.
