Freshman Christian Cepin (Woodside, N.Y.) delivered a walk-off, pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the seventh in game one and the bullpen combined on a two-hitter in the nightcap, as the 22nd-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team took two more from Saint Michael's College on Sunday afternoon at Penmen Field. The team celebrated Senior Day with a 7-6, come-from-behind win in game one and a 9-3 victory in the second game.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Saint Michael's put Southern New Hampshire back on its heels in the top of the first when Richard Gilboy hit a three-run homer to left-center.
- SNHU scraped one back in the home half, loading the bases with no outs before graduate student Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.) delivered a sacrifice fly to left to trim the deficit to 3-1.
- The Penmen sliced the margin in half in the second on an RBI double to left by junior Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.).
- The Purple Knights struck for three in the third, with the assistance of a pair of fly balls lost in the sun, to take a 6-2 lead.
- SNHU answered with three of its own in the bottom of the inning, including a two-run bomb to right-center off the bat of McNamara that pulled the Penmen within 6-5.
- Senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas) evened the score with a two-out RBI triple to left in the fourth.
- The score remained 6-6 into the bottom of the seventh when McNamara led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) and scored on a pinch-hit single to left from Cepin.
- McNamara went 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs and a home run.
- Britt was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks, a triple, RBI and a run scored.
- Senior JR Bozek (Danville, N.H.; walk, double, two runs) and Cumiskey (double, RBI) were both 1-for-3.
- Senior Parker Lendrum (Exeter, N.H.) relinquished six runs on nine hits over two-and-two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking a batter.
- Graduate student Noah Wachter (Concord, N.H.) fired three-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits, while punching out seven and walking just one.
- Junior Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) struck out the only two batters he faced to get the Penmen out of the seventh. He earned the win to improve to 7-3 on the season.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Southern New Hampshire struck first in the bottom of the first, as sacrifice flies from Britt and McNamara, sandwiched around a run-scoring triple from senior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.), gave the Penmen a 3-0 advantage.
- SNHU doubled its lead to 6-0 in the third, as an RBI double from Pisano and a Valera two-run shot to left did the damage.
- RBI doubles in the fifth by Valera and eighth by Pisano stretched the Penmen lead to 9-1.
- Saint Michael's scored twice in the ninth, but left the bases loaded.
- Pisano finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, a pair of doubles and a triple.
- Valera went 2-for-4 with three RBI, a run scored, a home run and a double.
- Britt (triple, RBI, run), Cumiskey (walk, run), Bozek (run) and junior Jacob Albert (Pelham, N.H.; double, run) were all 1-for-3.
- Sophomore Garrett Hammer (Auburn, N.H.) started and tossed two-and-two-thirds hitless innings, striking out one, while walking five and hitting a pair of batters.
- Freshman Shawn Taylor (Sewell, N.J.) allowed one run on one hit over two-and-a-third innings, striking out a pair and walking one.
- Sophomore Alex Primeau (Sainte Julie, Quebec) was charged with two runs, allowing just one hit over three-and-two-thirds, while punching out six and walking three.
- Junior Danny Tchou (Boca Raton, Fla.) struck out one, walked one and hit a batter in a third of an inning.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked 22nd in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25 and receiving votes in both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II Baseball Coaches Poll and D2 Baseball Top 25, has won 23 of the last 24, including eight straight.
- SNHU reached 35 wins in a season for the 11th time in program history, including for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
- The Penmen magic number to clinch the NE10 Regular-Season Championship, the No. 1 seed and hosting duties for the NE10 Championship is now two with four games to play in the regular season, as they take a three-game lead on Bentley University.
- The Penmen lead the all-time series, 53-3, and have won 43 of the last 44 meetings versus Saint Michael's. SNHU is a perfect 29-0 at home versus the Purple Knights,
- McNamara's 13th home run of the season is the 30th of his career. The 13 home runs tie him for the eighth most in a single season in SNHU history.
- Valera now has 10 long-balls on the season and 15 in his career.
- Britt now has the longest hitting streak on the squad at eight games.
- Britt (27), Bozek (23) and Cumiskey (23) have the longest reached base streaks on the team.
- SNHU moves to 17-1 at home this season and is now 177-39 (.819) at Penmen Field since the beginning of the 2014 season.
- McNamara, Britt, Bozek, Lendrum, Pisano, Jake Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.), Ruben Fernandez (Providence, R.I.), Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.), Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.), Steven Kienzle (Holbrook, N.Y.), Zachary Brassill (No. Hampton,, N.H.), Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), and Ben Gilbert (Altamont, N.Y.) were all honored in a Senior Day ceremony prior to game one.
