Baseball Runs Win Streak to Seven With Friday Sweep of Assumption

Senior Jake Lapham (Lansingburgh, N.Y.) fired a six-hit, complete-game shutout in game one, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team extended its winning streak to seven with two more wins Friday against Assumption University at Penmen Field. SNHU blanked the Greyhounds, 4-0, in the opener, before posting a 9-2 victory in game two.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas) put Southern New Hampshire on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run to center.
  • Junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) made it 3-0 in the second with a run-scoring base hit to left-center.
  • The Penmen tacked on an unearned run in the eighth when senior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) reached on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
  • Britt went 2-for-4 with the home run, two RBI and a run scored.
  • Valera (RBI), Pisano (run) and graduate student Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.) were all 1-for-4.
  • Senior JR Bozek (Danville, N.H.) and junior Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.) both went 1-for-3.
  • Lapham (4-0) allowed six hits over nine shutout innings, while striking out eight and walking two. He retired the final 10-in-a-row to end the game.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • SNHU again jumped out to an early lead in the second inning, putting up three runs on an RBI single from Cumiskey and a two-run single by Bozek.
  • Senior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) nudged the Penmen lead to 4-0 with a run-scoring double in the third.
  • After Assumption made it on the board in the top of the fourth, a Bozek RBI double and Britt run-scoring single in the home half widened the gap to 6-1.
  • Pisano capped the scoring in the sixth with a three-run blast to left-center than made it 9-2.
  • Bozek went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored.
  • Pisano was 1-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored.
  • Graduate student Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) finished 2-for-3 and scored a run.
  • Britt (RBI, run), Lavigne (double, RBI, run) and Valera (run) were all 2-for-4.
  • Cumiskey was 1-for-3 with a walk, RBI and pair of runs scored.
  • Freshman Christian Cepin (Woodside, N.Y.) earned his first start of the year and went 0-for-2, but walked twice and scored a run.
  • Freshman Zak Whitney (Keene, N.H.) improved to 3-1, as he gave up two runs on five hits, while striking out seven and walking one, over five-and-a-third innings.
  • Junior Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) retired both batters he faced, including one via strikeout.
  • Sophomore Alex Primeau (Sainte Julie, Quebec) struck out one and walked a batter in a hitless inning of work.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, receiving votes in both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25 and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II Baseball Coaches Poll, has won seven-in-a-row.
  • Britt finished the doubleheader 4-for-8 with a home run, three RBI, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.
  • Bozek (three RBI, run) and Valera (RBI, run) were both 3-for-8.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with Assumption, 58-26-2, and has won 19 of the last 21 meetings, including six-in-a-row. The Penmen have also captured 18 of the last 21 at Penmen Field.
  • Britt's home run is his third of the season and eighth of his career.
  • Pisano's long-ball is his second of the season and 14th of his career.
  • Valera extends his hit streak to nine games. During his nine-game hitting streak, he is 15-for-35 (.429) with four home runs, 13 RBI and 10 runs scored.
  • Bozek has a hit in 15 of his last 16, while Pisano has hit safely in 12 of his last 13. Both have six-game hitting streaks.
  • McNamara had hit safely in 11 of 12, as well as nine-in-a-row, before going 0-for-3 with a walk in game two.
  • SNHU improves to 7-0 at home this season and is now 167-38 (.815) at Penmen Field since the beginning of the 2014 season.
