Junior Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.) went deep three times, as the 17th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team took the final two games of the regular season from Pace University on Saturday at Finnerty Field. SNHU rolled to a 9-3 victory in the first game to officially clinch the NE10 Regular-Season Championship, before following with a 9-5 win in game two.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, as an RBI single from senior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) and three-run home run by freshman Christian Cepin (Woodside, N.Y.) set the tone early.
- SNHU doubled its lead in the second, with another three-run blast – this one by Cumiskey – and a sacrifice fly from fellow junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) made it 8-0.
- Senior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) hit a solo shot in the third to bring the score to 9-0.
- Pace would strike for three in the home half of the third to close the scoring.
- Cumiskey (walk, home run, three RBI, two runs), graduate student Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.H.; double, run), junior Jacob Albert (Pelham, N.H.; run) and junior River Hart (Nashua, N.H., walk) were all 2-for-3.
- Cepin (walk, home run, three RBI, run) and Pisano (walk, RBI, run) both went 1-for-3.
- Graduate student Noah Wachter (Concord, N.H.) started and gave up three runs on five hits over two-and-two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking three.
- Freshman Shawn Taylor (Sewell, N.J.) turned in a scoreless frame, despite allowing a pair of hits and issuing two walks.
- Junior Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) earned a win for the second consecutive day. Davis (9-3) fired three-and-a-third scoreless innings, striking out a pair, while giving up four hits and a walk.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Pisano again staked Southern New Hampshire to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a two-run double to left-center that scored senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas), who drew a two-out walk, all the way from first.
- SNHU doubled its lead when Cumiskey led off the second inning with his second homer of the day.
- Pace hung a five-spot in the fifth to take its first lead of the afternoon, but the Penmen answered with a single run in the sixth and three in the seventh, including a two-run homer from Cumiskey that flipped SNHU into the lead at 6-5.
- The Penmen added more insurance with a pair of unearned runs in the eighth, before the visitors tacked on another run in the ninth to make it 9-5.
- Cumiskey went 3-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored.
- Cisco went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, a double and a run scored.
- Pisano (double, two RBI, run) and Valera both finished 2-for-5.
- Britt went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored a pair of runs.
- Senior Parker Lendrum (Exeter, N.H.) worked the first four-and-a-third innings, allowing four runs on five hits and a pair of walks.
- Sophomore Garrett Hammer (Auburn, N.H.) finished it out, giving up just one run on six hits over four-and-two-thirds innings, while striking out a pair and walking one. Hammer earned the win and improved to 4-0 on the season.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked 17th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25, 30th in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II Baseball Coaches Poll and receiving votes in the D2 Baseball Top 25, has won 26 of the last 28, including three-in-a-row.
- The Penmen clinched the NE10 Regular-Season Championship, the No. 1 seed and hosting duties for the NE10 Championship with their win in game one. It is the ninth regular season title for SNHU, which has captured eight of the last nine.
- SNHU now leads all-time series, 20-19, and have won 15 of the last 22 meetings. The Setters have also won five of the last nine at home, though the Penmen have now captured the last three.
- Cumiskey went 5-for-8 with a walk, three home runs, six RBI and five runs scored in the doubleheader.
- Pisano was 3-for-8 with a walk, a double, three RBI and a pair of runs scored in the twinbill.
- With nine wins on the season, Davis is just two shy of matching the program's single-season record. Most impressive is that all 20 of his appearances this season have been out of the bullpen.
- Cumiskey now has a team-best 17 home runs on the year and 18 in his career. The 18 home runs are the second most in a single season in program history and just two shy of matching the record.
- Cepin's home run is his second of the season.
- Lavigne's sixth long-ball of the season is the 11th of his four-year Penmen career.
- Cumiskey has both the longest hitting streak (10) and reached base streak (27) on the team.
UP NEXT
- The Penmen will now host the NE10 Championship at Penmen Field on May 7-9. They will open up against the winner of Tuesday's (May 5) game between fourth-seeded Adelphi University and fifth-seeded Saint Michael's College on Thursday (May 17) at noon.
