MERCIER LIFTS MEN'S SOCCER
PAST AIC IN OT
BOX SCORE
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Gabe Mercier
(Middleboro, MA) scored with 50 seconds remaining in the first
sudden overtime victory period to lift Southern New Hampshire
University to a 1-0 Northeast-10 men's soccer victory over American
International College at Larkin Field Saturday afternoon. The
win snapped a three-game slide for the Penmen as they improved to
3-4-3 overall and 3-3-1 in Northeast-10 play, while the Yellow
Jackets fall to 1-7-3 and 1-6-1 in the league.
With the final moments clicking
down in the first 10-minute overtime session, Mercier took a
through ball from Ivan Boaventura (Pawtucket, RI)
down the middle. After taking two dribbles, Mercier fired a
15 yarder that found the right side of the net for Mercier's second
game-winner of the season.
Both teams had prime chances to get
on the board in the second half. Midway through the frame,
Chris Charles (Brooklyn, NY) appeared to score off
a rebound of his first shot attempt for AIC, but the goal was waved
off after the official called a handball. With just over two
minutes to go in the game, Mercier had a point-blank shot attempt
that deflected off the left post.
Junior Sean
Lambert (Rehoboth, MA) made his first career start
for Southern New Hampshire in goal and made three saves en route to
the shutout. American International keeper Matt
Marcoux (Blackstone, MA) made five saves for the Yellow
Jackets, who were outshot 12-7.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Nyack College in a 3:00
tilt at Larkin Field. American International hosts Southern
Connecticut on Tuesday evening at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow, MA.
