BOX SCORE
MANCHESTER, N.H. - A goal by Paulson
Edum (Calabar, Nigeria) 12:40 into the second half lifted
second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University to a 1-0 win over
No. 7 seed Assumption College in the quarterfinals of the
Northeast-10 Men's Soccer Championship at Larkin Field Sunday
afternoon. The Penmen, who entered the game ranked No. 5 in
the latest adidas/NSCAA Division II poll, improved to 14-2-3. The
Greyhounds, coached by former SNHU standout Jeremy
Bonomo, were making their first NE-10 Tournament appearance
since 2001 and saw their season come to a close at 6-7-5.
Southern New Hampshire will play
host to a Northeast-10 semifinal on Wednesday when it faces
third-seeded Franklin Pierce University. Game time will be
announced on Monday. The Ravens were 2-1 overtime winners
over No. 6 Southern Connecticut Sunday. The Penmen dealt FPU
a 2-1 loss earlier this season at Larkin Field.
After a scoreless first half, the
Penmen scored the game's lone goal in the 58th
minute. Adrian Schippers (Ashby, MA),
standing at the top of the box, played a ball to a cutting
Edum. Assumption keeper Brandan Sullivan overplayed Schippers
and Edum was able to fire a shot into the goal before Sullivan
recovered.
Assumption's best chance to score
had come moments earlier when Stephen Blaisdell had a header shot
from close range after a Penmen defensive breakdown, but his
attempt sailed just outside the left post.
SNHU keeper Sean
Lambert (Rehoboth, MA) was not forced to make a save as he
registered his ninth shutout of the season. Sullivan turned
aside four shots for the Greyhounds.
SNHU is now a perfect 10-0 at home
this season and is unbeaten in its last 14 games at Larkin Field
dating back to last season.
