MANCHESTER, N.H. - Randall Stallworth totaled 28 points to
lead Stonehill College to a 72-55 Northeast-10 men's basketball
victory over Southern New Hampshire University Sunday afternoon at
the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Skyhawks improved to 5-1 and 2-1 in
NE-10 play, while the Penmen are now 2-2 and 1-2 in the league.
Stallworth led three Stonehill
players in double figures. Mike Kernan finished with 13
points and 10 rebounds for the Skyhawks, while Matt Hall also
totaled 13 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor. A.J.
Rudowitz added nine points.
Troy Bowen
(Nashua, NH) led the Penmen with 12 points. Stephen
Wood (South Jamaica Queens, NY) added 11 points and eight
rebounds for Southern New Hampshire. Gerald
Carter (Harlem, NY) recorded nine points and six rebounds.
Stonehill never trailed and used a
14-4 run early to open up a 21-10 lead at the 9:43 mark of the
first half following a layup by Hall. The Skyhawks took their
largest lead of the first half, 24-12, with 6:22 left on a three by
Stallworth. SNHU cut the lead to eight, 35-27, at halftime
when Bowen connected on a three-pointer with four seconds left
before intermission.
An early 9-2 spurt gave the guests
a 44-29 lead 3:37 into the second half following a conventional
three-point play by Dan Heppert. Southern New Hampshire would
then go on an 11-2 run and cut the lead to five, 48-43, with 11:41
left on a steal and layup by Cory Vejraska
(Alachua, FL). The Penmen got as close as four, but Stonehill
put the game away with a 13-4 run capped by a Hall three-pointer at
the 4:44 mark to go up 61-48. Stonehill led by as many as 19
over the final minutes.
Stonehill shot 56.5% (13-23) over
the final 20 minutes and 52.9% for the game while limiting the
Penmen to 36.8% shooting on the afternoon. The Penmen, who
were outrebounded 38-35, were just 7-20 at the free throw line
while the Skyhawks were 12-19 at the charity stripe.
SNHU returns to action Wednesday
night when it travels to Saint Michael's College for a 7:30
contest.
