BOX SCORE

WORCESTER, Mass. - Despite a career-high 32 points from Gerald Carter (Harlem, NY) and 29 points and 10 rebounds from Sam Carey (Manchester, NH), Southern New Hampshire University dropped a 92-88 decision to Assumption College in Northeast-10 men's basketball Saturday afternoon.  The Greyhounds improved to 20-8 overall and 14-7 in NE-10 play, while the Penmen are now 12-14 and 9-12 in the league.

The loss, coupled with wins by Merrimack over Stonehill and Pace over Le Moyne Saturday afternoon, means the Penmen will be on the road for their Northeast-10 Tournament opener next Saturday, with opponent to be determined.  SNHU closes out the regular season Tuesday night at Saint Michael's College.

Carter finished 9-18 from the floor, 4-7 from three-point land and 10-11 at the free throw line while also grabbing eight rebounds.  Carey was 11-16 from the floor and 7-13 at the stripe.  Troy Bowen (Nashua, NH) added nine points and dished out six assists.  Mike Baldarelli drained five three-pointers and led Assumption with 28 points.

The opening moments of the second half saw four ties and four lead changes before Assumption used a 6-0 spurt to take a 59-53 lead with just over 13 minutes to go on a three by Baldarelli.  The Greyhounds continued to build their lead and a conventional three-point play by Mike Foti with 9:34 left gave the hosts their largest lead, 74-61.  Southern New Hampshire countered with a 9-2 spurt that got the lead down to six, 76-70, with 7:30 left.

A 6-0 spurt by the Penmen capped by a pair of Bowen free throws with 4:20 left cut the Assumption advantage to two, 80-78.  Southern New Hampshire would cut the Greyhound advantage to two three more times, the last coming on a Carter basket with six seconds left, but the Penmen could not come up with the equalizer.  SNHU's best chance came when it was down 88-86 with 44 seconds left with the ball but the Penmen turned it over.  Greg Twomey would hit a basket for Assumption with 14 seconds left following that turnover to make it a two-possession game.

The first half saw four ties and nine lead changes.  SNHU took a 21-14 lead with just over 11 minutes left in the first frame on a three by Carter, and took their largest lead, 28-20, with 7:46 to go on a Carey basket.  Assumption went on a 10-2 run capped by a Baldarelli three with 4:31 left to tie the game at 30.  SNHU countered with a 8-2 run and a three by Kelly Coder (Exeter, NH) made it 38-32 with 2:48 before halftime.  The lead changed hands three times in the final minute, with a tip-in by Foti just before the buzzer giving the Greyhounds a 43-42 lead at halftime.

Assumption shot a sizzling 61% for the game, including a 77.3% effort (17-22) in the first half.  The Greyhounds also held a 34-30 rebounding advantage.
