Greyhounds Race Past Men's Basketball 92-88

WORCESTER, Mass. - Despite a career-high 32 points from
Gerald Carter (Harlem, NY) and 29 points and 10
rebounds from Sam Carey (Manchester, NH), Southern
New Hampshire University dropped a 92-88 decision to Assumption
College in Northeast-10 men's basketball Saturday afternoon.
The Greyhounds improved to 20-8 overall and 14-7 in NE-10 play,
while the Penmen are now 12-14 and 9-12 in the league.
The loss, coupled with wins by
Merrimack over Stonehill and Pace over Le Moyne Saturday afternoon,
means the Penmen will be on the road for their Northeast-10
Tournament opener next Saturday, with opponent to be
determined. SNHU closes out the regular season Tuesday night
at Saint Michael's College.
Carter finished 9-18 from the
floor, 4-7 from three-point land and 10-11 at the free throw line
while also grabbing eight rebounds. Carey was 11-16 from the
floor and 7-13 at the stripe. Troy Bowen
(Nashua, NH) added nine points and dished out six assists.
Mike Baldarelli drained five three-pointers and led Assumption with
28 points.
The opening moments of the second
half saw four ties and four lead changes before Assumption used a
6-0 spurt to take a 59-53 lead with just over 13 minutes to go on a
three by Baldarelli. The Greyhounds continued to build their
lead and a conventional three-point play by Mike Foti with 9:34
left gave the hosts their largest lead, 74-61. Southern New
Hampshire countered with a 9-2 spurt that got the lead down to six,
76-70, with 7:30 left.
A 6-0 spurt by the Penmen capped by
a pair of Bowen free throws with 4:20 left cut the Assumption
advantage to two, 80-78. Southern New Hampshire would cut the
Greyhound advantage to two three more times, the last coming on a
Carter basket with six seconds left, but the Penmen could not come
up with the equalizer. SNHU's best chance came when it was
down 88-86 with 44 seconds left with the ball but the Penmen turned
it over. Greg Twomey would hit a basket for Assumption with
14 seconds left following that turnover to make it a two-possession
game.
The first half saw four ties and
nine lead changes. SNHU took a 21-14 lead with just over 11
minutes left in the first frame on a three by Carter, and took
their largest lead, 28-20, with 7:46 to go on a Carey basket.
Assumption went on a 10-2 run capped by a Baldarelli three with
4:31 left to tie the game at 30. SNHU countered with a 8-2
run and a three by Kelly Coder (Exeter, NH) made
it 38-32 with 2:48 before halftime. The lead changed hands
three times in the final minute, with a tip-in by Foti just before
the buzzer giving the Greyhounds a 43-42 lead at halftime.
Assumption shot a sizzling 61% for
the game, including a 77.3% effort (17-22) in the first half.
The Greyhounds also held a 34-30 rebounding advantage.
