Stonehill Puts Men's Basketball Away Early

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Ivan Almeida totaled 14 points as Stonehill College cruised to a 69-44 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  The Skyhawks improve to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 2-5 and 0-5 in the league.

Almeida finished 5-6 from the floor and also grabbed five rebounds and recorded three steals.  Mike Kernan finished with nine points and eight rebounds for the Skyhawks, who also got nine points from Sean Lowry and eight from Andre Tongo.

Cory Vejraska (Alachua, Fla.) was the lone Penmen player in double figures as he totaled 10 points.

Stonehill held the Penmen without a field goal for 10:32 to start the game, with Vejraska breaking the ice at the 9:28 mark.  By then, the Skyhawks had opened up a 16-4 lead.  Stonehill would close the half on an 11-0 run and a pair of Almeida free throws with two seconds left in the period gave the Skyhawks a 40-13 halftime lead.  The guests would stretch their lead to as many as 36 over the final 20 minutes.

Stonehill shot 52.2% for the game while limiting the Penmen to 34.7% shooting.  The Skyhawks also outrebounded the Penmen 37-23.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Tuesday night when it travels to Merrimack College for a 7:30 Northeast-10 contest.
