MANCHESTER, N.H. – Christian Rodriguez (Manchester, N.H.) tallied a goal and an assist as No. 8 Southern New Hampshire University recorded a 2-0 men's soccer victory over the University of New Haven at Larkin Field Saturday afternoon. The Penmen remain unbeaten at 4-0 overall (1-0-0 Northeast-10), while the Chargers fall to 1-2-1 overall (1-2-0).
With the win, SNHU opens its season 4-0 for the first time since the 1997 season.
The Penmen struck first with a tally at 22:06 in the first half. Danny Hernandez (Salem, N.H.) carried the ball through midfield, forcing his way through the Chargers defense. Hernandez sent a feed up to a streaking Ruben Resendes (Fall River, Mass.), who fired the ball right to left across the crease to Rodriguez, positioned alongside the left post.
Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored his second goal of the season with just under 11 minutes remaining in the contest. Rodriguez, who had drawn the foul, sent his free kick into the goal crease. A sprinting Tsonis charged to the front and redirected the ball past New Haven goaltender Jonathan Creem to double up the Penmen advantage.
Jon Mayo (Merrimack, N.H.) went the distance in goal for SNHU and turned aside four shots en route to the shutout. Creem halted six shots on net as the Penmen outshot the Chargers 18-11.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday evening, hosting Stonehill in a 7:00 contest at Larkin Field.
