MANCHESTER, N.H. – Jordan Branco (Norton, Mass.) scored twice as No. 14 Southern New Hampshire University extended its win streak to 11 games with a 2-0 win over the University of Bridgeport in non-conference men's soccer Wednesday afternoon. The Penmen improve to 14-2 overall, while the Purple Knights, who are ranked sixth in the East Region, are now 9-6-0.
SNHU's current win streak matches its longest since 2002, when it also won 11 in a row. The shutout also marks the eighth clean sheet for the Penmen in nine games.
Southern New Hampshire grabbed a 1-0 lead 6:50 before halftime. Branco collected a loose ball and chipped it over Purple Knight keeper Danny Hernandez for his seventh goal of the season. The Penmen would carry the 1-0 lead into the break.
The Penmen doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute. Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) sent in a crossing pass that P.J. Burnette (Brunswick, Maine) headed in for his sixth goal of the season. Branco closed out the scoring with two seconds. His initial shot was stopped by Hernandez, but Branco collected the rebound and scored. Liam McLean (Newcastle, England) registered an assist on the tally.
Joey Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.) stopped all five shots he faced en route to his fourth shutout of the season in eight games. Hernandez also made four saves as the Penmen outshot the Purple Knights 13-9.
Southern New Hampshire closes out the regular season on Saturday when it hosts American International College for a 4:00 contest.
