NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.—Ariel Teixeira (Warren, R.I.) scored the game-winning goal with 2:53 remaining in the first half to lead the sixth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University Penmen to a 2-1 win over No. 3 UMass Lowell in Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinal action. With the win, the Penmen improve to 10-7-2 and advance to the NE-10 semifinal round on Friday. The game will be against the winner of No. 2 Merrimack vs. No. 7 Pace and will be played at the home of the higher seed.
SNHU would tally the first goal of the game 9:11 into the first half as Emily Donahue (Bristol, R.I.) collected a pass from Teixeira and blasted the shot from 30 yards out over the head of UMass Lowell goalkeeper Jill Carlson.
The River Hawks would tie the game at a goal apiece 9:36 later as Julia Donigian collected a rebound off of a save and placed it in to score her third goal of the season.
At the 42:07 mark, Teixeira would fire from the top of the 18-yard box on the left side to give the Penmen the 2-1 advantage.
The teams would battle to a scoreless second period with both teams shooting an even three shots apiece.
SNHU goalkeeper Maggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) recorded two saves in the win. Carlson also posted for the River Hawks. The Penmen posted a narrow 11-7 shot advantage throughout the game.
The Penmen will make their first NE-10 semifinal appearance since 2003.
