MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored with just over 13 minutes remaining in regulation and Joey Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.) made three saves in goal as No. 16 Southern New Hampshire University blanked No. 4 Dowling College 1-0 in non-conference men's soccer Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field. The Penmen, who posted their third straight shutout to open the season, improve to 3-0, while the Golden Lions suffered their first setback of the season and fall to 3-1.
With its third straight shutout, Southern New Hampshire has opened the season with three straight shutouts for the first time since the 2000 campaign. The Penmen also extended their home unbeaten streak to 14 games (12-0-2) and have registered 10 straight shutouts at Larkin Field.
On the goal at the 76:47 mark, Christian Rodriguez (Manchester, N.H.), playing the ball on the left side of the field, delivered a crossing pass into the box to Tsonis. Tsonis took a touch and fired a low shot from 12 yards out that beat Dowling keeper Chris Kucera. Tsonis has scored in all three of SNHU's games to date.
Kapinos made three saves for his second shutout of the season, while the Penmen defense also recorded a team save. Kucera made eight saves as Southern New Hampshire outshot the Golden Lions 17-9, including a 12-7 advantage in the second half.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Wednesday night when it hosts Merrimack College in a 7:00 contest at Larkin Field.
