MANCHESTER, N.H. – No. 16 Southern New Hampshire University opened Northeast-10 Conference play with a victory as the Penmen downed Saint Anselm College 1-0 in men's soccer action Wednesday night. SNHU improved to 2-0 and 1-0 in the league, while the Hawks are now 1-2-1 and 0-1 in NE-10 action.
SNHU scored the game's lone goal with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half. Yannick Kabala (Manchester, N.H.) dribbled down the right side to the end line. Saint Anselm goalkeeper Eric Moriarty came out to play Kabala, who crossed the ball into Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.), who fired it home for his second goal of the season.
Penmen goalkeeper Jon Mayo (Merrimack, N.H.) was not forced to make a save for the hosts en route to the shutout, while Moriarty turned aside six shots for Saint Anselm. SNHU outshot Saint Anselm 18-2, including a 12-1 advantage in the first half.
The win extended SNHU's unbeaten streak at Larkin Field to 13 games (11-0-2) and also marked the ninth straight shutout the Penmen have posted at home dating back to 2010.
Southern New Hampshire hosts fourth-ranked Dowling in an early season battle of nationally-ranked teams Saturday at 1:00 at Larkin Field.
Wednesday night's game was the first played under the new light fixtures on Larkin Field.
