Saint Rose Holds Off Men's Basketball 73-66

ALBANY, N.Y. – Brian Hanuschak totaled 22 points to lead The College of Saint Rose to an 73-66 Northeast-10 men's basketball win over Southern New Hampshire University at Nolan Gym Wednesday evening.  The Golden Knights improved to 2-12 and 2-8 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 8-7 and 4-6 in the league.

Hanuschak finished 8-8 from the floor and also grabbed 11 rebounds to pace four Golden Knights in double figures.  Andre Pope finished with 16 points on 7-12 shooting, while Rob Gutierrez added 13 points.  Dominykas Milka recorded 12 points off the bench.

Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) led Southern New Hampshire with 17 points and nine rebounds off the bench, while Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) finished with 12 points.  Lucas Croteau (Rochester, N.H.) was 3-6 behind the arc and tallied nine points, while Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) added eight points.

Saint Rose led by as many as eight points in the second half, leading 46-38 with 14:20 to go.  Southern New Hampshire used a 14-6 run to tie the game 52-52 with nine minutes remaining on a Croteau three.  The game was knotted at 54 when the Golden Knights took the lead for good with a 6-0 run capped by a Sheldon Griffin free throw with 6:40 left that made it 60-54.

SNHU would pull within one with a 5-0 spurt that made it 60-59 with just under four minutes to go.  Pope hit a three to make it 63-59 with 3:24 left, but Stapleton converted a pair at the line to make it 63-61.  Pope drilled another three at the 2:37 mark to make it 66-61 and a James Wilson jumper with 1:49 left extended the lead to 68-61.  The guests would pull within five twice in the final minute but could get no closer.

The Golden Knights led 21-10 7:32 into the game, but Southern New Hampshire used a 14-2 run to take a 24-23 lead 8:26 before halftime on a pair of Bonsignore free throws.  The Penmen led 30-25 on a Bonsignore basket with seven minutes left when the hosts used a 12-2 run to lead 37-32 with just over two minutes to go, and a Kareem Thomas basket at the buzzer gave Saint Rose a 41-34 lead.

Saint Rose shot 68% in the first half and 54.2% for the game while limiting the Penmen to 28.1% shooting over the final 20 minutes and 32.8% for the contest.  The Golden Knights outrebounded Southern New Hampshire 36-33.

SNHU returns home Saturday when it hosts the University of New Haven in a 3:30 Northeast-10 contest.
