WORCESTER, Mass. – Kevin Donahue totaled 20 of his game-high 29 points in the second half to lead Assumption College to an 80-67 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at Laska Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds improved to 7-6 and 5-4 in the NE-10, while the Penmen saw a three-game win streak snapped and are now 8-6 and 4-5 in the league.
Donahue finished 12-17 from the floor and 5-10 behind the arc to lead three Assumption players in double figures. Tim Beinert was 7-11 from the floor and finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Cory Schmidt was 3-3 behind the arc and finished with 11 points.
Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) led Southern New Hampshire with 14 points, going 5-6 from the floor and 4-6 at the free throw line. Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) totaled 13 points and six rebounds, while Greg DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn.) added 11 points.
Assumption led 39-29 at halftime and extended its lead to 12 early in the second half before the Penmen used a 13-2 run capped by a Stapleton basket with 14:01 left to pull within one, 43-42. The Greyhounds countered with a 9-2 run to make it 54-46 on a Donahue three with 10:44 to play. Assumption maintained at least a six-point lead the rest of the way and closed the game with a 7-2 run.
Southern New Hampshire led 11-10 5:15 into the game following a DeSantis three, but Assumption took control of the game with a 10-2 run capped by a Mike Auriemma three with 5:00 left before intermission to build a 29-21 lead. The Penmen hit back-to-back threes by Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) and DeSantis to cut the lead to two with 2:34 left, but the hosts closed the half with eight unanswered points to lead 37-27 at the break.
The Greyhounds shot 61.5% in the second half and 59.3% for the game, going 32-54 from the floor while knocking down nine of their 22 three-point attempts. Assumption outrebounded Southern New Hampshire, which shot 43.9% for the game, 36-23, including a 28-16 advantage on the defensive glass.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Saint Rose for a 7:30 Northeast-10 contest.
