MANCHESTER, N.H. – Second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University registered a pair of second half goals as it topped third-seeded UMass Lowell 2-0 in the semifinals of the Northeast-10 men's soccer championship Friday night at Larkin Field. The Penmen improve to 16-3 overall, while the River Hawks now stand 13-5-1 on the season.
SNHU advances to the Northeast-10 championship game for the second straight year and will travel to top-seeded Merrimack College for Sunday afternoon's title tilt, as the Warriors topped Franklin Pierce 1-0 Friday evening. The Penmen defeated Merrimack 2-1 in North Andover, Mass. during the regular season.
Southern New Hampshire got on the board in the game's 69th minute. Ruben Resendes (Fall River, Mass.) sent in a long cross into the box that found Mohamed Toufik (Grande Synthe, France) in front of the net. Toufik got past UML keeper Chris Maierle and scored for his sixth goal of the season.
Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) added an insurance goal on a restart with 6:23 to go. Resendes sent a long free kick into the box that Tsonis was able to head inside the near left post for his 14th goal of the season.
Penmen keeper Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.) made four saves en route to his second shutout of the postseason, while Maierle had one stop. SNHU outshot the River Hawks 11-2 in the second half and 16-7 for the game and had seven of the game's eight corner kicks.
