Men's Hoop Closes Season With Setback at Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael's College placed four players in double figures as it posted a 59-48 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at the Ross Sports Center.  The Purple Knights improve to 11-15 and 10-12 in the NE-10 with the victory, while the Penmen end their season 12-15 overall and 8-14 in the league.

Corey Crawford knocked down all three of his three-point attempts and finished with 13 points to lead Saint Michael's.  He also grabbed six rebounds.  Tom Ward also drilled three trifectas and finished with 11 points, while Dom Ditlefsen and Derek Knutty each tallied 10 points.

BJ Cardarelli (Manchester, Conn.) was 3-5 behind the arc and finished with 11 points for Southern New Hampshire, while Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) and Marcus Matthews (Valley Stream, N.Y.) added 10 and nine points, respectively.

Saint Michael's never trailed and opened up an 11-4 lead 7:42 into the game following a Ward three.  The Penmen cut the lead to three twice, with a Josh Morgan-Green (Upper Marlboro, Md.) three at the 9:11 mark making it 14-11, but the hosts pulled away with an 11-0 run to build a 25-11 lead 5:23 before intermission.  The Purple Knights held a 32-22 lead at the break.

SMC gradually pulled away to start the second half and opened up a 49-35 lead with just under 11 minutes to go on a Mike Thompson basket.  Trailing 52-38, Southern New Hampshire used an 8-2 spurt capped by a Cardarelli three with 6:14 left to pull within eight, 54-46, but the Penmen would get no closer.

Saint Michael's knocked down 10 of its 23 three-point attempts and shot 43.8% for the game while limiting Southern New Hampshire to 30.8% shooting in the first half and 36% for the contest, including a 5-21 effort behind the arc.  The hosts held a 38-26 rebounding advantage.
