Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Seventh-ranked Southern New Hampshire University got goals from three different players as it defeated Queens (N.Y.) College 3-1 in non-conference men's soccer Thursday afternoon at Larkin Field. The game was the season opener for both teams.
After several early chances, the Penmen got on the board 2:14 before intermission. After Ruben Resendes (Fall River, Mass.) was fouled just outside the top of the 18, Miguel Carneiro (New Milford, Conn.) sent a high arcing kick into the box that Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) got a head on. The ball beat Knight keeper Stilianos Fotinos and trickled over the goal line to give the Penmen a 1-0 lead.
Southern New Hampshire made it 2-0 in the 54th minute when Jonathan Lupinelli (Mont de Marsan, France) sent in a left-to-right corner kick. Sebastian Stezewski (New Britain, Conn.) tapped the ball back to a charging Sam Kelley (Bedford, N.H.) who fired it home for his first goal in a Penmen uniform. Jordan Branco (Norton, Mass.) made it 3-0 at 67:14 when he saved a ball on the end line and beat a Queens defender with a great individual effort.
Queens made it a 3-1 game in the 72nd minute when Danny Stoker headed home a left-to-right corner kick off the foot of Glen Reid.
Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.) made one save in goal for Southern New Hampshire while Fotinos made seven saves as the Penmen outshot the Knights 19-5. SNHU also generated an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Southern New Hampshire is idle until Wednesday, September 5 when it hosts the University of Bridgeport in a 4:00 contest at Larkin Field.
