MANCHESTER, N.H. – Powered by three second-half goals, sixth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University defeated the University of Bridgeport by a score of 3-0 in Wednesday's non-conference men's soccer matchup at Larkin Field. The Penmen improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Purple Knights fall to 0-3.
After a scoreless first half, the Penmen jumped out to a 1-0 lead three minutes into the second half when Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) beat Purple Knights' goalkeeper Augustin Prados with a rocket off a rebound from an initial shot by Keegan Campbell (Norton, Mass.). Thirteen minutes later the Penmen added some insurance when good ball movement by Yannick Kabala (Manchester, N.H.) and Tsonis set up Mohamed Toufik (Grande-Synthe, France) with a goal from 10 yards out. The Penmen capped off their scoring in the 74th minute when Austin Britt (Massena, N.Y.) headed in a corner kick to the upper right corner from Jonathan Lupinelli (Mont de Marsan, France).
The Purple Knights were never able to get anything going offensively as the Penmen defense held them to seven shots, none of which were on net. Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.) earned the shutout in net for the Penmen, who outshot the Purple Knights 19-7. Prado made four saves for Bridgeport.
The Penmen return to action Saturday as they travel to Dowling College for a 1:00 contest. The next SNHU home game is slated for Wednesday, September 19 as the Penmen host Stonehill in a 7:00 contest at Larkin Field.
