Late Tsonis Heroics Lift No. 6 Men's Soccer Past Dowling 1-0

Box Score

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. – Senior Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored with 15 seconds remaining to lift sixth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University to a 1-0 men's soccer triumph over Dowling College Saturday afternoon.  The Penmen improved to 3-0 on the season, while the Golden Lions now stand 1-2-1 overall.

With the game appearing headed to overtime, Tsonis took a pass from sophomore Mohamed Toufik (Grande Synthe, France) and sent in a shot from the top of the 18 that trickled past Dowling keeper Chris Friedl.

SNHU's best chance up to that point came in the 42nd minute when Kenny Doublette (Greenwich, Conn.) found himself one-on-one with Friedl but the keeper was able to turn aside his attempt.  Dowling nearly got on the board in the 71st minute on a Sean Dougherty snipe, but SNHU goalie Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.) made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.

DiMaggio made three saves to post his second shutout of the season, while Friedl also made three stops.  The Penmen generated a 16-7 shot advantage on the afternoon.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to Merrimack College for its Northeast-10 opener at 7:00 pm.
