Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Ashley Jaskula (Palmer, Mass.) scored in the 88th minute to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Adelphi University Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field. The Penmen improved to 3-1 (1-1 Northeast-10) with the victory, while the Panthers fall to 3-1 (0-1 NE-10) on the season.
At 3-1, SNHU is off to its best start since 2003 when the Penmen were 3-0-1 through four games.
After a scoreless first half, the Panthers got on the board first when sophomore Donna Liotine converted on a cross from Alison Gronenthal to make it 1-0 Adelphi. The Penmen controlled the ball for the majority of the half but could not convert until the 79th minute when Gabby Cappello (Andover, Mass.) broke through the defense and found herself on a breakaway. Cappello beat Adelphi goalie, Sam Whitney, to the lower left corner of the net to knot the game. The Penmen struck again only minutes later when Jaskula rocketed home a loose ball in front of the net to give the Penmen a 2-1 lead.
The Penmen defense stayed strong in the last three minutes as the Panthers used their whole team to attack the net. The Panthers had a great scoring opportunity as time expired but the shot sailed wide
Maggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) made two saves in goal for Southern New Hampshire, while Whitney made six saves. Southern New Hampshire outshot Adelphi 13-5 on the afternoon.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to UMass Lowell in a 7:00 contest.
