Men's Basketball Falls to Assumption in Overtime

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Terrance Bobb-Jones and Ronson Quick combined for 53 points as Assumption College outlasted Southern New Hampshire University 83-75 in overtime in a Northeast-10 men's basketball game at the SNHU Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.  The Greyhounds improve to 11-2 and 8-1 in the NE-10 with the win, maintaining their hold on first place in the league, while the Penmen, who saw a four-game win streak snapped, are now 9-4 and 5-4 in the league.  SNHU also suffered its first loss at home this season (6-1).

Bobb-Jones finished 8-15 from the floor and totaled 27 points and eight rebounds, while Quick had 26 points and eight boards on 10-16 shooting.  Kevin Donahue was the other Greyhound to finish in double figures as he tallied 13 points.

BJ Cardarelli (Manchester, Conn.) led four Southern New Hampshire players in double figures with a season-best 21 points on 8-14 shooting while also grabbing 10 rebounds.  CJ Marriro (Boston, Mass.) had a career-high 16 points on 6-10 shooting while also grabbing five rebounds, while Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) added 11 points.  Mike Stys (Hooksett, N.H.) went 6-7 at the free-throw line and notched 10 points.

Southern New Hampshire found itself down 66-60 with 1:19 left in regulation following a fallaway three by Quick as the shot clock expired.  On SNHU's next possession Stys was fouled shooting a three and made all three to make it 66-63.  Bobb-Jones would miss on Assumption's next possession and Dobrovic would get fouled with 16 seconds to go while attempting a putback.  He made the first but missed the second, and Assumption's Tim Beinert grabbed the rebound.

Beinert was fouled but missed both free throws, with Dobrovic grabbing the rebound.  Following a timeout at midcourt with 8.3 seconds left, Marriro would tie the game with a layup with 3.3 seconds to go, and a final Assumption attempt was off the mark.

In overtime, Marriro put the Penmen on top 68-67 with 4:27 left, but that would be SNHU's last lead, as Bobb-Jones made a layup with 4:11 left, then following an empty SNHU trip, Donahue sank a three to make it 72-68 with 3:21 left.  Southern New Hampshire cut the lead to two twice, the last with 2:27 left on a Stys basket that made it 74-72, but Assumption sealed the win by going 7-10 at the free-throw line the rest of the way.

The guests led 32-30 at halftime and extended their lead to 40-32 three minutes into the second-half following a Bobb-Jones basket.  Southern New Hampshire responded with a 14-5 run and a layup by Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) with 11:05 to play put the Penmen on top 46-45.  SNHU took its largest lead, 55-51, with 5:40 to go following a pair of free throws by Dobrovic.  The Penmen led 60-58 following a Cardarelli three with 3:41 left, but Assumption scored the game's next eight points.

Assumption scored the game's first five points, but an 11-2 Penmen run capped by a Cardarelli three 4:45 into the game put SNHU on top 11-7.  Neither side led by more than four points the remainder of the half, and a Donahue basket 1:27 before intermission proved to be the difference as the Greyhounds carried a 32-30 lead into halftime.

Assumption shot 53.4% for the game and limited the Penmen to 40.3% shooting, but the Greyhounds were just 15-27 from the charity stripe, including 5-13 in regulation, while Southern New Hampshire cashed in 20 of its 24 opportunities at the charity stripe.  SNHU outrebounded Assumption 39-34, including a 16-10 offensive rebounding advantage that led to a 17-9 lead in second-chance points.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it hosts The College of Saint Rose in a 7:30 Northeast-10 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
