New Haven Pulls Away from Men's Basketball Late

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Jeremy Williams totaled 26 points as the University of New Haven downed Southern New Hampshire University 75-60 in Northeast-10 men's basketball Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium.  The Chargers won their ninth in a row to improve to 10-5 and 7-4 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 10-5 and 6-5 in the league.

Williams finished 6-8 behind the arc and 8-13 overall to lead four Chargers in double figures.  Justin Exum was 3-6 behind the arc and notched 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Jeffery Adkins finished with 15 points.  Eric Anderson added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Southern New Hampshire was led by Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.), who scored 17 points on 7-10 shooting in his first game since December 15.  Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) was 6-7 from the floor and tallied 14 points, while Mike Stys (Hooksett, N.H.) knocked down a pair of three-pointers and added 12 points.

SNHU led 49-46 with just over 12 minutes left following a layup by Bonsignore before New Haven used a 10-0 run capped by three Exum free throws with 7:55 left that made it 56-49.  Stys made a basket at 3:14 that made it a 69-59 game, but New Haven held the Penmen without a free throw the rest of the way as the hosts closed the game on a 6-1 run, part of a 29-11 run over the final 12 minutes.

The Penmen trailed 37-36 at halftime and 41-36 early in the second half before using an 11-2 run capped by a three-point play by Sanders with 13:06 left that made it 47-43.

In a first half that saw 10 lead changes, New Haven used a 13-2 run capped by a Adkins layup 5:22 before intermission to give the Chargers a 32-25 lead.  The Penmen countered with eight unanswered points and a Sanders basket with 2:42 left gave Southern New Hampshire a 33-32 lead.  New Haven scored the next five points to lead 37-33, but Bonsignore hit a three at the buzzer to make it a one-point game at the break. 

New Haven shot 61.1% from three-point land for the game, draining 11 of its 18 attempts, while shooting 51.1% overall.  The Chargers also took 12 more trips to the free throw line, going 18-21 while the Penmen were 4-9.  Southern New Hampshire, which was outrebounded 30-27, shot 45% for the game and was 6-18 behind the arc.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Pace University for a 7:30 game.  The next Penmen home game is Saturday, January 26 when SNHU hosts Adelphi University in a 3:30 contest.
