Adelphi Captures See-Saw Battle With Men's Basketball in OT

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – John Calarco hit a baseline jumper with six seconds remaining to lift Adelphi University to a 65-64 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at the SNHU Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.  The Panthers improve to 10-9 and 7-6 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 11-6 and 7-6 in the league.

Calarco finished 5-9 from the floor and was one of three Panthers in double figures, with eight of his 11 points coming in overtime.  Bradley Simpson led Adelphi with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Duane Morgan added 11 points.

Mike Stys (Hooksett, N.H.) led four Southern New Hampshire players in double figures with a game-high 16 points, going 6-6 at the free throw line.  BJ Cardarelli (Manchester, Conn.) and Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) each finished with 14 points, while Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) recorded 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

In a game that saw 24 lead changes, 13 ties and neither side leading by more than six, Calarco gave Adelphi a 63-62 lead with 23 seconds left on a jumper.  Sanders was fouled on SNHU's next possession, and sank both free throws with 15 seconds to go to make it a 64-63 contest.  Following a Panther timeout, Calarco again gave the guests the lead on his 12-footer.  Adelphi called another timeout, and Stys, who notched the game-winner in a one-point win at Pace Wednesday night, drove to the basket but his attempt in traffic was off the mark.

Overtime saw eight lead changes, including four in the final 47 seconds.  A pair of Calarco free throws with 3:33 left gave Adelphi a 59-56 lead, but the Penmen scored the next four points and a pair of free throws by CJ Marriro (Boston, Mass.) with 2:11 left gave SNHU a 60-59 lead.

Southern New Hampshire held a 54-48 lead with 2:34 to go in regulation following a Cardarelli layup, but the Panthers would score seven of the game's next eight points and tie the game on Morgan's conventional three-point play with 1:07 to go.  With six seconds remaining, Anthony Libroia hit a jumper that went in, but hit the guidewire above the basket, leading to the shot being waved off.  Sanders had a driving layup coming out of a timeout but could not convert.

The Penmen held a 16-11 lead 5:34 into the game following a Cardarelli layup before Adelphi used a 8-1 run to take a 19-17 lead with 9:23 left before halftime on a Calarco layup.  A Sanders layup as time expired in the first half gave Southern New Hampshire a 26-24 lead at the break.

Adelphi shot 46.4% for the game and limited the Penmen to 38% shooting, but the hosts were 20-28 at the charity stripe while the Panthers converted just nine of their 21 free throw attempts.  SNHU was 6-18 behind the arc while Adelphi was 4-14, and both teams grabbed 35 rebounds.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University in a 7:30 Northeast-10 contest.
