Southern Connecticut Rallies for 62-56 Men's Hoop Win

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern Connecticut State University outscored Southern New Hampshire University 49-24 over the final 20 minutes as it posted a 62-56 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory Tuesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  The Owls improve to 12-6 overall and 9-5 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 11-7 and 7-7 in the league.

Greg Langston led Southern Connecticut with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Trevon Hamlet and Rashamell Vereen each finished with 11 points for the Owls.

Southern New Hampshire was led by Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) who tallied 13 of his 16 points in the first half while also grabbing 10 rebounds.  Mike Stys (Hooksett, N.H.) was the other Penmen player in double figures as he scored 11 points.

SCSU trailed by as many as 23 points in the first half and 32-13 at halftime, but opened the second half on a 14-2 run capped by a Deshawn Murphy three with 13:55 left that made it 34-27.  The Owls trailed 40-30 when they used a 14-3 run to take their first lead of the game, 44-43, with 6:13 to go on a conventional three-point play by Vereen.

The lead was short-lived as Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) knocked down a three on SNHU's next possession.  Southern Connecticut took the lead for good with 4:28 left on a Langston Bucket that made it 48-46, and the guests utilized a 9-0 run to build a 53-46 lead with 2:56 left.  The Penmen pulled within four, 55-51, with 1:48 left on a pair of CJ Marriro (Boston, Mass.) free throws, but could get no closer.

Southern New Hampshire scored the game's first nine points and opened up a 16-2 lead 7:07 into the game following a Dobrovic three.  The Penmen took their largest lead, 27-4, with 7:35 left on a Stys trifecta.  The Owls used a 9-1 run to pull within 15 with 1:50 left before halftime, but SNHU had the final four points of the first half to take a 32-13 lead into the locker room.

The Owls shot just 32.2% for the game, but went 17-24 at the charity stripe while the Penmen, who shot 39.6% overall, were just 9-19.  Southern Connecticut was 7-26 behind the arc while SNHU was 5-16, while the guests held a commanding 51-33 rebounding advantage, including a 19-7 edge on the offensive glass.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday, February 2 when it travels to American International College for a 3:30 Northeast-10 contest.  The next Penmen home game is Wednesday, February 6 when SNHU welcomes crosstown rival Saint Anselm College for a 7:30 tilt.
