Men's Basketball Wins Fourth Straight, Holds Off Le Moyne

Box Score

SYRACUSE, N.Y.BJ Cardarelli (Manchester, Conn.) scored 16 points as Southern New Hampshire University held off Le Moyne College for a 64-58 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory at Ted Grant Court Wednesday night.  The Penmen won their fourth in a row to up their record to 9-3 and 5-3 in the NE-10, while the Dolphins are now 7-5 and 4-4 in the league.

Cardarelli finished 6-10 overall and 3-5 behind the arc while also grabbing six rebounds.  Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) recorded 12 points, while Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) notched all 11 of his points in the first half.  CJ Marriro (Boston, Mass.) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds, while Mike Stys (Hooksett, N.H.) added eight points and four assists.

Jim Janson led all scorers with 21 points and eight rebounds for Le Moyne, while Nate Gause added 11 points.

SNHU led 58-49 with three minutes to go following a layup by Marriro, but saw its lead cut to two, 60-58, with 18 seconds to go following a Janson basket.  Stys would get fouled and sink two at the line to make it a two-possession game, then on the next Dolphin possession, Marriro came up with a block of a three-point attempt by Qwadere Lovell.  Dobrovic controlled the rebound and sealed the win with two at the line after getting fouled.

The Penmen led 30-26 at half time but an early 6-2 Le Moyne spurt tied the game with just over 18 minutes left 32-32.  A 9-2 SNHU run capped by a Stys three made it 41-34 with 16:02 left.  The Dolphins pulled within three, 50-47, with 7:48 left on a layup by Brian Zapisek before the guests opened it up with a 9-2 run over the next 4:48.

The two teams traded the lead four times in the early going, before Southern New Hampshire took a 9-7 lead after a Cardarelli three with 14:03 to go in the first half.  The Penmen extended their lead to seven, 20-13, with just under nine minutes to play following a Cardarelli basket, but a 12-4 Dolphin run capped by a Gause three with 2:53 left before the break gave the hosts a 25-24 lead.  SNHU reclaimed the lead with a three on its next possession by Max Taylor (Shokan, N.Y.) and took a 30-26 lead into the locker room.

Southern New Hampshire shot just 35.8% for the contest, but knocked down 12 of its 32 three-point attempts and was 14-18 at the free throw line, while Le Moyne, which shot 42.1% for the game, was just 3-19 behind the arc and 7-16 at the charity stripe.  The Dolphins outrebounded the Penmen 40-35 on the evening.

Southern New Hampshire returns home Saturday when it hosts Assumption College in a 3:30 Northeast-10 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  The Greyhounds currently lead the Northeast-10 standings (10-2, 7-1) and are receiving votes in the latest NABC Division II Top 25.
