Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Pierre Omanga (Paris, France) scored twice as No. 14 Southern New Hampshire University eased past Saint Michael's College for a 5-1 Northeast-10 men's soccer victory Wednesday afternoon at Duffy Field. The Penmen won their 11th straight to improve to 11-1 and 9-0 in NE-10 play, while the Purple Knights are now 5-5 and 5-3 in the league.
Saint Michael's staked itself to a 1-0 lead at the 10:30 mark. Omar Khartabil lofted a ball over the top of the SNHU defense to Anthony Stanley, who fired it home from the right side for his third goal of the season. Senior Christian Rodriguez (Manchester, N.H.) notched the equalizer just under five minutes later at the 15:08 mark when his free kick hit a Purple Knight defender and deflected into the left side of the goal for his second goal of the season.
Southern New Hampshire grabbed the lead with two goals in a 40-second span late in the first half. At the 34:44 mark, junior Kenny Doublette (Greenwich, Conn.) drew Saint Michael's keeper Nicco Roque out, then Doublette sent a centering pass over to sophomore Sebastian Stezewski (New Britain, Conn.) in the box, who put home his third goal of the season. In the 36th minute, Omanga scored his ninth goal of the season on a breakaway after taking a pass from junior Yannick Kabala (Manchester, N.H.) to make it 3-1.
Omanga made it 4-1 when he converted a penalty kick in the 58th minute. Sophomore Ryan Simpson (Manchester, N.H.) closed out the scoring with his second goal of the season at the 71:23 mark after putting home a volley by Doublette.
SNHU keeper Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.) made three saves in goal over the first 71:23 before giving way to Myles Groenloh (Gevelsberg, Germany), who was not forced to make a stop. Roque turned aside five shots in the first 59:58 before Chris Howard came on in relief, making a pair of saves. The Penmen outshot the Purple Knights 17-10 and also held a 13-2 edge in corner kicks.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday afternoon when it travels to Assumption College for a noon contest. The next Penmen home game is Tuesday, October 22 when SNHU hosts Bentley University for a 7:00 contest.
