Slow Start Dooms Men's Basketball in 73-65 NCAA Loss to Assumption

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Tim Beinert led four players in double figures with 18 points as third-seeded Assumption College downed sixth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University 73-65 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship East Regional at the SNHU Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.  The Greyhounds improve to 21-7 and advance to Sunday's semifinal round, while the Penmen saw a six-game win streak snapped and wrap up the season 19-11.

Beinert made all six of his field goal attempts and was 6-8 at the free throw line.  Terrance Bobb-Jones finished with 12 points and 17 rebounds, while Kevin Donahue also recorded 12 points.  Tim Kasper notched 10 points, while Ryan Rozsnaki registered seven points and 10 assists.

CJ Marriro (Boston, Mass.) finished with a career-best 22 points for Southern New Hampshire, going 10-10 at the free throw line and 6-10 from the floor.  Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) was 8-10 at the free throw line and totaled 17 points, while Mike Stys (Hooksett, N.H.) was 8-9 at the charity stripe and added 15 points.

Southern New Hampshire, which trailed by as many as 11 in the second half several times, including 59-48 with 7:02 remaining, used a 12-4 run to pull within four, 64-60, following a pair of Marriro free throws with 3:11 to go.  Bobb-Jones would convert a layup and get fouled with 2:57 left, but after missing the free throw, Assumption's Jimmy Zenevitch got the offensive rebound, and another Bobb-Jones basket made it 68-60 with 2:31 to go.  The Penmen turned it over on their next possession and could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Trailing 39-28 at halftime, the Penmen opened the second half with a 10-4 spurt and pulled within five, 43-38, with 15:34 left on a Dobrovic three.  Assumption countered with a 12-6 run and pushed the lead back to 11, 55-44 with 11:33 left in the game.

The two teams traded the lead three times in the early going.  Southern New Hampshire held a 15-11 lead with 11:48 to go before intermission when a 17-2 Greyhound run capped by a pair of Roznaki free throws with 4:55 left gave the guests a 28-17 lead.  The Penmen were held without a field goal for nearly eight minutes until Dobrovic snapped the drought with a layup with 3:42 left.  Assumption took its largest lead, 34-20, on a fast-break dunk by Bobb-Jones with 2:37 to go and took a 39-28 lead into the locker room.

Free throws were the story of the afternoon as the two teams were whistled for a total of 53 fouls (SNHU 28, Assumption 25).  The Greyhounds were 24-37 (64.9%) at the stripe, while the Penmen overcame 31.6% shooting from the field by going 27-32 (84.4%) at the charity stripe.  The guests, who outrebounded SNHU 40-31, shot 51.1% (24-47) for the game.  Neither team shot well behind the arc (SNHU 2-13, Assumption 1-8), and the Penmen matched a season low with five turnovers.

Southern New Hampshire was making its 17th NCAA appearance in program history and first since 2005.  The Penmen have just one senior on the roster and are slated to return eight players who were freshmen or sophomores this season.
