MANCHESTER, N.H. – Brian Francolini (Ellington, Conn.) (left) tallied a goal and an assist as Southern New Hampshire University jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead in an eventual 4-0 men's soccer victory over Dominican (N.Y.) College Wednesday night at Larkin Field. The Penmen upped their record to 2-1, while the Chargers are 1-2 on the season.
The hosts struck three times in the final 17:08 of the first half to build a 3-0 advantage. Miguel Carneiro (New Milford, Conn.) opened up the scoring in the 28th minute when he took a through ball from Pierre Omanga (Paris, France) and tucked it inside the near left post for a 1-0 lead. With 4:59 remaining before intermission, Christian Rodriguez (Manchester, N.H.) dribbled through several Dominican defenders and beat keeper Andres Ruiz low for an unassisted tally. Just under three minutes later, Francolini sent a ball across the box that deflected off Ruiz to Keegan Campbell (Norton, Mass.), who put it away for his first career goal.
Francolini had the only score of the second half just past the 70 minute mark as he headed in a long right-to-left cross off the foot of Jonathan Lupinelli (Mont de Marsan, France).
Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.) started and played the first 76:53 in goal for Southern New Hampshire and made a pair of saves before giving way to Myles Groenloh (Gevelsberg, Germany), who finished off the shutout as he did not face a shot in the final 13:07. Ruiz recorded four saves as the Penmen outshot the Chargers 23-10, including 13-3 in the first half.
Southern New Hampshire is idle until Wednesday, September 18, when it opens Northeast-10 play at home against in-state rival Franklin Pierce. That match is slated for a 7:00 start.
