No. 1 Penmen Post Convincing Win at No. 5 SCSU

Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Miguel Carneiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Sebastian Stezewski (New Britain, Conn.) each tallied a goal and an assist as top-ranked Southern New Hampshire University posted a convincing 5-0 Northeast-10 men's soccer victory over No. 5 Southern Connecticut State University Saturday evening at Jess Dow Field.  The Penmen upped their record to 10-0-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the NE-10, and are one of eight unbeaten teams remaining in Division II, while the Owls, who entered Saturday as the nation's only unbeaten, untied team, fall to 9-1 and 7-1 in the NE-10.

With the win, the Penmen are unbeaten in 34 games dating back to last season and undefeated in their last 29 Northeast-10 regular season and tournament games.

Southern New Hampshire staked itself to a 2-0 halftime lead with two goals in a span of 2:16.  At the 30:46 mark, Carneiro scored his second goal of the season to open the scoring when he took a deflected pass from Stezewski in the middle of the box and fired it home.  Stezewski made it 2-0 in the 34th minute when his shot from the top of the 18 found the bottom left corner for his seventh tally of the season.

The Penmen put the game away with three goals in the game's final 23:10.  Just shy of the 67-minute mark, Jonathan Lupinelli (Mont de Marsan, France) sent a free-kick into the box that was deflected up front into the goal.  Kenny Doublette (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) made it 4-0 in the 78th minute when his shot from the left of the box found the top right corner, with Carneiro assisting.  Orri Gustafsson (Akureyri, Iceland) closed out the scoring at 83:15 when he scored on a give-and-go on a breakaway with Ryan Reynolds (Springfield, Mass.) for his third goal of the season.

Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.) made one save en route to his fourth shutout of the season for Southern New Hampshire.  Noah Varonier made one save and allowed four goals in 81 minutes before being relieved in the Owl goal by Robert Gallucci, who let in the final goal.  Southern New Hampshire held a commanding 20-4 shot advantage and generated an 8-2 advantage in corners.

Southern New Hampshire returns home on Wednesday when it hosts Saint Michael's College in a 7:00 Northeast-10 contest at Larkin Field.
