MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Kenny Doublette (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) registered a hat trick to lead top-ranked Southern New Hampshire University to a 6-0 Northeast-10 men's soccer victory over Saint Michael's College Wednesday night at Larkin Field. The Penmen improved to 11-0-1 and 8-0-1 in the NE-10, while the Purple Knights stand 7-6 and 3-6 in the league.
With the win, the Penmen are unbeaten in 35 games dating back to last season (33-0-2), and undefeated in their last 30 Northeast-10 regular season and tournament games (29-0-1). Southern New Hampshire has also won 20 straight at Larkin Field.
Freshman Nate Fournier (Belchertown, Mass.) also scored twice, the first two goals of his collegiate career.
Doublette opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he dribbled through two defenders and fired to the inside of the far right post. The Penmen took a 2-0 lead into halftime when Brian Grisell's (Brookfield, Conn.) attempt found the upper right corner for his fourth goal of the season. Gilbert Manier (Rigali, Rwanda) assisted on the tally.
The Penmen doubled their lead with a pair of Doublette goals four minutes apart early in the second half. At the 49:19 mark, a feed from Miguel Carneiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) left Doublette all alone with Purple Knight keeper Matthew McBride, with Doublette beating McBride to make it 3-0. In the 54th minute, Doublette tracked down a long entry pass, then dribbled around to get by a Saint Michael's defender and fired from the top of the box for his 10th goal of the season.
Reynolds registered his first collegiate goal in the 78th minute when he knocked home a left-to-right corner kick from Ryan Reynolds (Springfield, Mass.). Fournier's second goal came with 8:35 remaining when an initial shot by Sebastian Stezewski (New Britain, Conn.) was stopped by McBride, with Fournier collecting the rebound and scoring.
Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.) made a pair of saves over the first 59:33 before giving way to Andrew Pesci (Windham, N.H.), who was not forced to make a save the rest of the way. McBride recorded eight stops before being replaced by Taylor Wallace after Fournier's second goal. The Purple Knights also recorded one team save.
Southern New Hampshire held a 28-5 shot advantage on the evening and took nine of the game's 12 corner kicks.
SNHU returns to action Saturday night when it hosts Assumption College in a 7:00 Northeast-10 contest at Larkin Field.
