Le Moyne Knocks Off Top-Ranked Men's Soccer in 2OT

Box Score

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A goal by Nick Rauscher with 3:08 remaining in the second overtime session lifted Le Moyne College to a 1-0 victory over top-ranked Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 men's soccer Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.  The Dolphins won their third straight to improve to 11-4 and 7-4 in the NE-10, while the Penmen, who have held the No. 1 spot in the NSCAA Division II rankings all season, are now 13-1-1 and 10-1-1 in the league.

The loss is Southern New Hampshire's first since dropping a 1-0 decision to Post University on September 5, 2013, a span of 415 days.  The Penmen were unbeaten in 37 consecutive games (35-0-2), which will go down as the second-longest unbeaten streak in NCAA Division II history.  Southern New Hampshire was also unbeaten in 32 straight NE-10 regular season and tournament games dating back to a 2-1 2OT loss to the University of New Haven on October 20, 2012, which is tied for the third-longest string in Division II annals for a team in conference play.

Le Moyne's goal came on a counterattack, as Mark Gentile played a ball across the box.  Rauscher slipped a header between the right post and Penmen keeper Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.) for his first goal of the season.

Moments earlier, Southern New Hampshire has nearly come up with the game-winner, as a header by Dominic Samuel (Toronto, Ontario) was turned aside by Ben Beaury with a diving save.

Southern New Hampshire had controlled the first overtime session, generating four corner kicks, but unable to turn any of those into a shot on goal.

The best chances for each team in regulation came in the second half.  Nine minutes into the second frame, a blast from Sofiane Tergou (Bitche, France) was knocked over the crossbar by a sprawling Beaury.  Two minutes later, a blast from Zachary MacNabb was controlled by DiMaggio as he dove to his right to keep the hosts off the board.

Beaury made five saves en route to the shutout, while DiMaggio turned aside five shots.  The Penmen held a 14-9 shot advantage on the afternoon and took eight of the game's 10 corner kicks.

Southern New Hampshire closes out the regular season Friday night when it hosts The College of Saint Rose for Senior Night in a 7:00 contest at Larkin Field.
