MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire University rallied from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 Northeast-10 women's volleyball victory over Assumption College Tuesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen, who have won three of four, improve to 14-9 overall and 6-5 in NE-10 play, while the Greyhounds are now 6-13 and 3-8 in the league. The set scores were 18-25, 24-26, 25-13, 25-15, 15-13.
With the win, Southern New Hampshire has its most victories since the 2003 season when it went 16-12.
The fifth set was tied 11-11 when the Penmen took advantage of a Greyhound ball handling error and a block by Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) and Nina McGouldrick (Richardson, Texas) to build a 13-11 lead. However, back-to-back kills for Assumption's Bizzie Gonring tied the match at 13 and forced the Penmen to call a timeout. With the guests serving, a Coronis kill made it 14-13, and with McGouldrick serving for the match, Coronis came up with another kill to seal the victory.
The reigning Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week, Coronis finished with a match-high 14 kills on .462 hitting while also adding a pair of blocks. McGouldrick finished with 18 digs, eight kills and six service aces, while Carolyn Scacchi (Peabody, Mass.) and Emma Houlihan (Shoreham, N.Y.) tallied eight kills apiece. Maeghan Higgins (Hesperia, Calif.) racked up 21 digs, while Kathleen Schurman (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) added 12. Catherine Cotton (Murphy, Texas) posted her ninth double-double of the season with 45 assists and 12 digs.
Stephanie Hawley led Assumption with 10 kills, while Courtney Bagwell tallied 26 assists. Kiki Romanik handed out 32 assists on the evening.
Southern New Hampshire begins a two-game swing through the Empire State this weekend when it travels to The College of Saint Rose on Friday night for a 7:00 Northeast-10 contest.
