MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) had a match-high 17 kills and hit .516 to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 3-1 Northeast-10 women's volleyball win over Franklin Pierce University Tuesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The win, the seventh in eight games for the Penmen, ups their record to 11-5 and 3-1 in the NE-10. The Ravens, who entered Tuesday night on a six-game win streak, are now 9-7 and 2-2 in the league.
The set scores were 25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 28-26.
Coronis recorded 17 kills with just one error on 31 attempts for her fifth double-digit kill effort of the season. She also contributed a pair of block assists. Nina McGouldrick (Richardson, Texas) tallied 11 kills and 13 digs, while Megan Salamun (Scottsdale, Ariz.) added nine kills. Maeghan Higgins (Hesperia, Calif.) notched 26 digs, while Kendra Mikuta (Orland Park, Ill.) added 15. Catherine Cotton (Murphy, Texas) handed out 48 assists on the evening.
Aiden Garcia and Catie Swiderski led Franklin Pierce with 10 kills apiece. Sarah Machugh racked up 26 digs, while Hannah Runge recorded 36 assists.
In the deciding fourth set, SNHU held a 24-22 lead and was serving for match point when a pair of kills and a Penmen attack error put the Ravens up 25-24 and serving to extend the match to a fifth set. An FPU ball handling error tied the set 25-25, but Garcia gave Franklin Pierce a 26-25 lead with a kill. Coronis tied the match with a kill, then a pair of attack errors by the guests gave SNHU the victory.
As a team Southern New Hampshire hit .211 on the evening while the Ravens hit .127. The Penmen had eight service aces to FPU's two, but were nearly undone by 17 service errors. The hosts also racked up nine more digs (72-63).
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Merrimack College in a 1:00 Northeast-10 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
