MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Gabby Cappello (Andover, Mass.) scored with 3:29 left in the second overtime session to lift Southern New Hampshire University to a 1-0 Northeast-10 women's soccer victory over Merrimack College Wednesday night at Larkin Field.  The Penmen snapped a four-game winless streak and improved to 3-3-1 overall and 1-2 in the NE-10, while the Warriors are now 3-2-1 and 1-2-1 in the league.

Cappello scored following a left-to-right corner kick off the foot of Alexa Poulin (Tewksbury, Mass.).  A headed clear attempt by a Merrimack defender came out to Cappello at the top of the box, and she lifted a shot from just inside the top of the 18 that found the upper right corner for her second goal of the season.

Merrimack had the best chance to score in overtime up to that point with just under a minute left in the first extra session.  Off a corner kick, Bianca Giacalone tried to sneak a shot inside the near left post, but her bid was turned away by a sliding Autumn Scanlon (Waltham, Mass.).

Southern New Hampshire's best bid to get on the board in regulation came with around 15 minutes remaining in the second half.  Alena Woodarek (Springville, N.Y.) tried to slide a shot inside the near post, but Merrimack keeper Meghan Gulbrandsen came up with a stop.  On the ensuing corner kick, Megan Hanna (Chelmsford, Mass.) lifted a shot from 12 yards that nearly snuck under the crossbar, but a leaping Gulbrandsen knocked the attempt over the bar.

Scanlon turned aside five shots en route to her second shutout of the season, while Gulbrandsen made seven saves.  Merrimack generated a 16-13 shot advantage on the evening, and the Warriors eked out a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University in a 1:00 contest at Larkin Field.
